Bydgoszcz and the Brda River

Bydgoszcz is nestled along the banks of the Brda River, and it has a fascinating tale to tell about water. Back in 1346, Polish King Casimir III granted residents the right to trade via waterways. The city thrived as it processed and transported goods like salt and ceramics. By the late 18th century, the opening of the Bydgoszcz Canal, which connected the Oder and Vistula rivers, further enhanced the city’s international ties, ushering in a new era of prosperity.

Today, many historical structures from the industrial era have been transformed into museums and cultural heritage sites. Visitors can stroll along the riverside paths, which provide a relaxing space to immerse in nature right in the heart of the city.

The TeH2O Heritage Trail

The TeH2O Trail invites you to explore the significance of water in the lives of Bydgoszcz residents. This thematic route connects 19 industrial and craft sites that flourished thanks to the pure, clear waters. Each stop features information boards introducing the people who lived and worked there, along with key historical events of the city.

Highlights include Exploseum, an impressive museum housed in an old explosives factory; a trio of 18th-century wooden granaries by the Brda River, now serving as a museum; and the Water Museum, which hosts a special exhibit on soap-making where you can craft your own bar of soap.

Strolling Along the Bydgoszcz Canal

The Bydgoszcz Canal is the second oldest navigable canal in Poland, trailing only the Jagiellonian Canal. It connects the Oder and Vistula rivers through branches like the Brda, Noteć, and Varta. Built in just 18 months with over 12,000 workers from Lower Saxony and the Czech Republic, the canal stretches 24.5 km and features six locks, turning Bydgoszcz into an international trade port.

Alongside the canal, there’s a walking path that allows you to admire the historic locks, including Czyżkówko and Okole, which featured in the Polish TV series from the 1960s, “Four Tankmen and a Dog.”

Exploring the Brda River by Boat

As you wander along the Bydgoszcz Canal and the Brda River, consider taking a cruise or kayaking to enjoy a leisurely view of the lush greenery and diverse architecture of the city. From May to September, you can head to the Rybi Rynek fish market to board one of the two solar-powered boats named Słonecznik and Słonecznik II.

The westward journey takes you to Ceglane Most, an arched iron bridge built in 1851, while heading east leads to Słoneczny Młyn, a former granary now transformed into a hotel. You can also easily rent kayaks at several spots, such as the Bydgoszcz Harbor or Zimne Wody campsite.

The Bydgoszcz Canal Museum

The Bydgoszcz Canal Museum is a fantastic place to delve deeper into the history and significance of the canal in the city’s development. Here, you can borrow a kayak for free for two hours to paddle along a short stretch of the canal, shaded by trees. The museum first opened its doors in 2006, featuring regular exhibitions about the canal's history and the life surrounding it.

Exhibits include models of locks, photographs of the Władysław IV Bridge, which was destroyed in 1972, and a detailed model of a wooden boat made to scale.

Exploring Restored Spaces

Mill Island, once the center of mills and factories, has been successfully transformed into a park and cultural institutions, including Rother’s Mills and four branches of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum. You can admire works by Polish artists at the Museum of Modern Art in the Red Granary or visit the Leon Wyczółkowski House to view pieces by renowned realist artists from the early 20th century.

Here, you can also relax with locals on the grassy areas and beach of the six-hectare island, enjoying views of the Old Town and the flowing river.

For a broader perspective of Mill Island and Bydgoszcz’s Old Town, head up to Henryk Dąbrowski Park, which features a red-brick water tower built in 1900 with an observation deck on top. The views from here are unforgettable.
