Explore Calabria, Italy's hidden gem known for its unique cuisine and rich history. A memorable trip for anyone who loves to discover.

Experience Calabria Through the Eyes of an Artisan

Upon arriving in Calabria, just as I was beginning to soak in the beauty of this region, I found myself standing in front of a "bottega" (craft workshop) belonging to artist Antonio Montesanti in Pizzo. He shared tales of the Greek hero Achilles while the hum of cars and Vespas whizzed by outside. His cheerful voice transported me to another world, where motorcycles turned into donkeys and vehicles became chariots.

Antonio explained that local fishermen still uphold the tradition of scratching diagonal lines on the cheeks of swordfish with their nails to free the souls of Achilles' loyal warriors, the Myrmidons, who transformed into these powerful fish after their commander’s death.

Interesting Facts About Nicotera

Next, I drove through a quaint town called Nicotera with my guide Liane Scherf. This place is not only renowned for its cuisine but also recognized as a center for teaching the world how to eat, having been selected as one of the data collection hubs for Mediterranean diet research in 1957. On that scorching July day, Nicotera felt like a place that could teach you how to take a proper afternoon nap.

We encountered three boys waiting to cross the street, each wearing a cardboard box on their heads. They weren’t just playing; they were reenacting a medieval legend about a Catholic girl named Mata and a Muslim prince named Grifone, as they became giant puppets in local festivals.

Calabria: A Destination of Precious Memories

Gary Portuesi, the founder of Authentic Explorations, remarked, "Calabria is like Sicily 20 years ago." Together with his partner Marco Palermo, he helped me gain a deeper understanding of Calabria, a region not widely known but filled with unexplored wonders. Throughout the trip, I truly felt Gary's passion to introduce Calabria to a wider audience.

Exploring Costa degli Dei

Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) is one of Calabria's most stunning destinations, stretching 34 miles from Pizzo to Nicotera, featuring long stretches of white sandy beaches and rugged cliffs. Tropea is the most famous resort town here, boasting ancient architecture and traditional eateries.

As I wandered through the narrow streets, I left my footprints on the ancient stones, admiring the large wooden doors and sun-soaked courtyards. Not far away, Le Mura restaurant served unique dishes, from fresh swordfish to grilled beef.

Helpful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

If you're planning a trip to Calabria, be prepared to have transportation available to explore the surrounding attractions. You can fly from Vietnam to Rome or Naples, then take a train or bus to Lamezia Terme, which is just a short taxi or car ride away from Tropea.

Calabria does not require a visa for Vietnamese citizens, but make sure to prepare all necessary documents before your trip to Italy. The cost of living in Calabria is also quite reasonable—a meal at a restaurant averages around 300,000 VND. This is truly an exciting destination for those who love to explore Italy's distinct culture and cuisine.

Finally, don't forget to visit Reggio Calabria, the most populous city in the region, famous for the stunning Riace Bronze statue, and conclude your journey through this land with unforgettable memories.
