Exploring the Luxurious United Airlines 787-9 Experience
I recently had the opportunity to attend a media event hosted by United Airlines in Los Angeles, where I got an up-close look at their stunning new Boeing 787-9. As I settled into the aircraft, I snapped photos of every seat and angle to provide you with an overview of United’s most modern airplane.
The Cabins of the 787-9
Initially, I only admired the exterior, but I must say that these new Dreamliners represent a significant leap forward from their predecessors. While not revolutionary, the design is visually appealing, and the seating features in each cabin enhance the passenger experience. The 787-9 boasts just 222 seats, including 64 Polaris business class seats, 35 Premium Plus seats, and 123 economy seats.
Polaris Studio: A Unique Business Class Experience
The standout feature of the new 787 is the Polaris Studio, a fresh offering in business class that provides spaciousness and elevated service. There are eight seats located in the divider row of each Polaris cabin, which are about 25% larger than standard seats and come with a second ottoman for your companion.
Each seat is equipped with a 27-inch 4K OLED screen — the largest provided by any U.S. airline — along with wireless charging and Bluetooth connectivity. Notably, rows 9D/F can convert into a double bed, offering passengers a cozy space to relax.

Polaris Business Class: New Enhancements
Behind the Studio seats lies the updated Polaris cabin, maintaining a 1-2-1 configuration for easy aisle access from every seat. A key update is the introduction of sliding doors — a feature United previously hesitated to implement, but has now embraced. The seat screens are also larger at around 19 inches, and the overall design fosters a more private atmosphere for travelers.
Premium Plus: A Real Step Up
The Premium Plus cabin hasn’t changed much in layout but sports a fresher design. The cabin configuration is 2-3-2 with 35 seats, offering 38 inches of legroom, wider seats, and improved privacy thanks to new dividers. Wireless charging and larger seatback screens are also nice perks in this service package.
Economy Class: Larger Screens and Bluetooth Connectivity
The economy cabin is arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration with 123 seats, including 39 Economy Plus seats that offer extra legroom. Each seat features a 4K OLED screen with Bluetooth connectivity — an exciting upgrade, although United is also planning to enhance the complimentary headphones for passengers.
The Cockpit and Galley
During my tour, I also visited the cockpit, where a friendly pilot took a photo with me. The forward galley is equipped with new barriers to facilitate easier service for the crew. Additionally, a larger galley at the rear includes a dining table for the crew, making meal preparations more convenient.
A Focused Strategy on Premium Seating
United is clearly betting on premium seating. With 99 premium seats on board, this aircraft is designed to maximize revenue from passengers willing to pay more for space and comfort. This strategy seems to be effective, but we’ll need to see how the market responds in the future.
I hope consumers won’t face prohibitively high fuel fees that deter them from booking flights. Regardless, United Airlines' ongoing advancements in cabin design are impressive, and they are leading the way in the U.S. aviation industry in this regard.
