Introduction to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
If you're looking for an easy yet impressive way to witness California's giant sequoias, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is the perfect destination. Located along the northern California coast, this park protects over 5,600 acres of ancient forest, fern-filled canyons, and pristine sandy beaches.
It's one of the most visitor-friendly parks in the entire Redwoods region, making it an ideal spot for first-time visitors. During our trip in September 2025, we spent four days exploring the Redwoods, and Prairie Creek quickly became one of our favorite stops.
Must-See Attractions
Prairie Creek Redwoods Park is not only home to magnificent ancient trees but also offers a variety of exciting activities. Here are some experiences you shouldn't miss:
- Big Tree Wayside: Home to one of the tallest sequoias in the park, it's easily accessible and perfect for photo opportunities.
- Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway: A 14.5 km route lined with ancient sequoias, showcasing many other notable sights along the way.
- Fern Canyon: A stunning canyon adorned with lush ferns, providing an adventurous hike.
Exploring Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway
This scenic route is the main road through Prairie Creek, where towering sequoias cast their shade over the path. It's an impressive starting point for most visitors. Along the way, you'll encounter various points of interest, including Corkscrew Tree and the Prairie Creek Visitor Center.
The parkway may be just 14.5 km long, but the breathtaking views will keep your eyes glued to the scenery. Notably, on the first Saturday of each month from October to May, this road closes for "Walk and Bike Day," offering a fantastic opportunity to stroll through the forest without traffic noise.

Photography at Big Tree Wayside
The sequoia at Big Tree Wayside is one of the largest in the park, estimated to be around 1,500 years old, standing 87 meters tall with a diameter of up to 7.3 meters. You can easily reach it with a short walk from the parking area. For a more engaging experience, consider hiking the Karl Knapp Trail that loops back to Big Tree.

This trail takes you through ancient forests and leads you to Big Tree Wayside. It's an easy hike, primarily on flat terrain. At just 4 km long, the trail is family-friendly, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the massive ancient trees and vibrant ferns.
An Exciting Drive on Cal Barrel Road
What could be better than driving through forested roads? Cal Barrel Road, a winding 4.8 km trail through ancient trees, offers a more adventurous driving experience compared to Newton B. Drury. However, be cautious as this is a narrow one-way road with two-way traffic.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
Before heading to Prairie Creek Redwoods, here are some important tips:
- Visa: Vietnamese travelers need a visa to enter the USA, so prepare your documents and itinerary clearly.
- Transportation: You can fly from Hanoi (HAN) or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to nearby cities like San Francisco. Flight prices typically range from 15 million to 30 million VND, depending on the season and booking time.
- Best Time to Visit: May to September is ideal for pleasant weather and outdoor activities.
- Entrance Fees: Entrance to the park is completely free, but plan for camping or nearby hotel costs. A night of camping can range from 30,000 to 60,000 VND per person.
