Exploring Cusco: The Ancient Capital of the Incas in Peru

The Allure of Cusco

Cusco is truly a place you can't miss when visiting Peru. Nestled in the Andes mountains, this city was once the capital of the Inca Empire, the largest indigenous empire in the Americas. Today, Cusco stands out not only as a prominent tourist destination but also as a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage. Here, you can find magnificent Inca walls alongside modern cafes and shops, creating a harmonious blend of the ancient and contemporary.

I have visited Cusco twice, first spending two weeks there in 2023 and returning in 2026 for an additional month of exploration. If you ask me if I’d go back again, the answer is an enthusiastic yes!

Getting to Cusco

The fastest and most convenient way to reach Cusco is by flying. The city is directly connected to many major tourist spots in Latin America, such as Bogotá and La Paz, but most travelers will fly in from Lima. If you have limited time but want to make the most of your trip in the land of the Incas, flying is definitely the way to go. If you book in advance, tickets are around $55. Just keep in mind that you’ll be landing at an altitude of 3,399 meters, so it may take some time to acclimatize.

Alternatively, you can book a bus online with local operators. Information about bus stations, travel times, and ticket prices can be found on Bookaway. Specifically, the journey from Lima takes about 23 hours, from Arequipa about 11 hours, from Huacachina (Ica) around 18 hours, and from Puno about 8 hours.

Where to Stay in Cusco

Cusco is not only the gateway to Machu Picchu but also a standout destination in Peru. The city offers a wide range of accommodation options, from five-star hotels to budget hostels. With a population of 500,000, the historic and walkable city center is the perfect place to explore.

A great option is to stay right in the city center, just a few minutes' walk from Plaza de Armas. This makes it easy to access restaurants, cafes, and bars. While the area can be bustling and traffic may be an issue, there’s no denying the thrill of stepping outside and encountering Inca heritage.

I stayed near Plaza de San Francisco on my second visit and loved being close to the famous San Pedro market. Some notable accommodations include the Hilton Garden Inn Cusco, where you can find modern comfort, and the Wyndham Costa del Sol Cusco, a 17th-century building transformed into a hotel.

Memorable Experiences in Cusco

Before diving into the exciting activities, I want to introduce a special combined ticket called the Boltero Turistico. Priced at 130 soles, this ticket grants you access to 16 sites and museums in Cusco and the Sacred Valley over a period of 10 days. It’s a fantastic option if you plan to visit at least two sites, as individual entry fees are typically around 70 soles (approximately $21).

One must-see highlight in Cusco is Sacsayhuaman. If I had to choose just one site to visit, this would be it. Built from massive stones weighing up to 120 tons, Sacsayhuaman is an engineering marvel that was constructed without any modern machinery. This site was actually larger than Machu Picchu before it was discovered in 1911.

Sacsayhuaman is not just a monument; it holds many mysteries regarding its function and architecture. Theories suggest it may have been a fortress, a temple, or even a site for religious rituals. The clever arrangement of the stones and their harmony with the surrounding environment make it a true genius of Inca civilization.

We also cannot overlook the fierce battles that took place here between the Incas and the Spanish during their conquest. Imagine the feeling of walking beneath these colossal stones—a mix of awe and curiosity about how such large blocks were transported and assembled. From the highest point of Sacsayhuaman, you can take in breathtaking views of Cusco and the majestic Andes mountains. According to legend, the city is shaped like a jaguar, but you’ll have to explore and feel it for yourself.

Other Exciting Activities in Cusco

Aside from Sacsayhuaman, Cusco has plenty of other attractions to discover. You can sign up for a free walking tour to learn more about the city's culture and history. There’s nothing quite like experiencing local cuisine at markets or small eateries throughout the city. Be sure to try ceviche or sip on coca tea to help adapt to the altitude.
