Explore Din Sun Kopitiam, an affordable dim sum spot in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur, known for its unique and diverse dishes.
Discover Din Sun Kopitiam
If you're in Klang Valley, finding a kopitiam that's not in a shopping mall and easily accessible by public transport can be a challenge. However, Chinatown, particularly Petaling Street, is a perfect spot for those who love affordable local delicacies. Recently, I stumbled upon Din Sun Kopitiam, a charming little eatery just a few blocks away from the heart of Chinatown.
Unlike modern cafes, Din Sun boasts a classic design with rough wooden walls and a mix of plastic and wooden furniture. While it may not exude luxury, it offers a cozy atmosphere. The friendly and open service makes diners feel right at home.
Signature Dishes at Din Sun
Stepping away from the typical kopitiam offerings like nasi lemak or noodles, Din Sun presents a rich selection of dim sum. We decided to try the Steamed Shrimp Dumplings with Pineapple Bun (RM7.80 for 3). The dumpling skin resembles a pineapple, adorned with black specks that mimic seeds. While the filling is tasty, it’s quite ordinary, mainly consisting of minced chicken. It’s delicious, but lacks the expected pineapple flavor.
Next, we sampled the Salted Egg Custard Buns (RM6.80 for 2). These light green buns were larger than anticipated and firmer than usual. The flavor leaned more towards regular custard rather than authentic salted egg filling. A hint of sourness from the rice flour could elevate the taste.
Other Dim Sum Delights
We can't forget to mention the Steamed Chee Cheong Fun (RM8.80 with mixed filling). Instead of bok choy, this dish uses romaine lettuce. The rice noodle rolls are thicker than usual, with chicken as the primary filling. The accompanying soy sauce is rich and flavorful, complemented by crispy fried shallots, creating a delightful taste.

The standout dish of the day was the Stir-Fried Carrot Cake (RM8.80). These golden, crispy carrot cake pieces are soft inside and stir-fried with a fragrant soy sauce. The highlight of this dish is the chives and bean sprouts, adding extra crunch and a fresh flavor.
Other Options
To fill our stomachs a bit more, we ordered a plate of Char Kuey Teow (RM12.90), a generous serving for two. Instead of traditional ingredients like Chinese sausage or clams, this version is stir-fried with cabbage and carrots. Although it has a slight tang from the addition of ghee, it was still delicious, albeit different from the Char Kuey Teow many might expect.
Overall Impression
Most dishes at Din Sun Kopitiam stay within a safe flavor range, familiar and not overly complicated or bold. While nothing stands out remarkably, all the dishes are well-seasoned and carefully prepared. If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy light, pleasant meals without excessive spices — this is a fantastic choice.
