Discover the lion rewilding project at Lolelunga, Zambia, marking a significant step forward in wildlife conservation. Learn about the fascinating process and its importance.
Introduction to Lolelunga Conservation Area
In the remote wilderness of Northern Zambia, an exciting event is unfolding along the Lunga River. The Lolelunga Private Reserve has celebrated the return of lions to its land for the first time in 15 years. The rewilding of lions began on April 12, 2026, marking a significant advancement not only for this 74,000-acre reserve but also for lion conservation efforts across the nation. This initiative represents the first time in Zambia's history that captive lions have been reintroduced into the wild.
About the Rewilded Lions
This project is a collaborative effort between the Zambia National Parks and Wildlife Authority and the Ministry of Tourism. A pair of seven-year-old lions, one male and one female, were relocated from Mukuni Big Five in Livingstone—a well-known tourist destination near Victoria Falls where visitors can get up close with lions, leopards, and elephants.
While Mukuni Big Five has some conservation programs, it has faced criticism regarding animal welfare. The rewilding of these lions into the Lolelunga ecosystem may take several months, but conservation partners are meticulously prepared to ensure the project's success.
The Global Status of Lions
African lions are currently classified as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. Their population has decreased by 36% over the last three generations, with only around 23,000 individuals remaining in the wild, down from nearly 200,000 a century ago. Zambia is one of the few countries with over 1,000 wild lions, but most are concentrated in large national parks like South Luangwa and Kafue.
The Rewilding Process
The rewilding program at Lolelunga is set to unfold in three phases. First, experts will ensure that the lions are physically healthy and socially bonded. The second phase involves a “feeding trial,” where staff will place animal carcasses in the area to help the lions learn to hunt as they would in their natural habitat. The final phase will monitor their behavior once they have acclimated to life in the wild.

The Significance of the Project
Transferring the lions from Mukuni Big Five to Lolelunga also aims to protect genetic integrity for future generations. Lolelunga is located in Northern Zambia, while Mukuni Big Five is near the southern border with Zimbabwe, ensuring that the lions do not interbreed with other populations.
This reserve has also received overwhelming support from the local Kaonde community. They have drilled over 50 wells to provide clean water for both animals and people, built two secondary schools for local children, and offered agricultural support to 500 local families. The management team of the reserve, comprised of local owners, is committed to supporting future wildlife conservation projects.
Similar Projects Worldwide
There are precedents showing that lions can thrive in the wild. A study from a private reserve in Limpopo, South Africa, found that captive lions can form social groups, hunt independently, and reproduce when released into the wild. However, there remains skepticism about the success of these rewilding initiatives.
Visiting Lolelunga Conservation Area
Lolelunga Conservation Area has been open to visitors since August 2025 and accommodates only 14 guests, ensuring an intimate experience with nature. If you're planning a trip to Zambia, this is a destination worth considering to learn about wildlife conservation efforts and explore the beauty of its ecosystems.
In the context of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, rewilding species—especially lions—is crucial for maintaining ecological balance. This project not only aims to restore lion populations but also inspires other wildlife conservation efforts globally.
