Introducing Hon Kee Porridge
Fresh fish porridge might seem like an unusual dish to many, especially for those hearing about Hon Kee Porridge for the first time on Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur. However, this beloved dish has been around since 1949 and has been passed down through three generations, showcasing its enduring appeal and quality.
Humbly nestled in the vibrant city, Hon Kee Porridge can easily be overlooked if you're not paying attention. A helpful tip is to look for the bright red sign displaying the menu, along with pictures of customers enjoying their porridge in vibrant orange bowls. Once you spot that, you've found the right place!
A Culinary Experience at Hon Kee
During my visit to Hon Kee Porridge, I ordered a bowl of fresh fish porridge (RM12) and a bowl of crispy fried pig's intestine porridge (RM10). Within less than 30 seconds, my steaming hot bowl arrived at the table, accompanied by a plate of fresh fish garnished with slices of ginger and cilantro.
If you're wondering whether to eat the fish sashimi-style with soy sauce, don’t worry! Just add the fish, fresh ginger, and cilantro into your porridge and give it a good stir—it's a fun little exercise for your fingers! When the fish turns from pink to white, it's cooked and ready to be enjoyed. Honestly, the process of cooking the fish adds to the overall dining experience.
Distinctive Flavors
The porridge here is incredibly smooth, harmonizing beautifully with the subtle sweetness of the fresh fish. I added a few drops of soy sauce for an extra savory kick. Notably, this dish lacks any fishy smell, making it a light, balanced, and stomach-friendly meal.
If you’re not quite ready to try fresh fish porridge, start with the crispy fried pig's intestine porridge. Initially, I was hesitant about this dish, but after tasting it, I realized that the crispy and savory flavor of the intestines is truly delightful! It’s reminiscent of crispy chicken skin, perfectly paired with the porridge to balance its saltiness. I relished every bite.

Although the concept of fresh fish porridge and pig's intestine may not sound appealing at first, after tasting it, I became a huge fan of this spot. I will definitely return for the crispy fried pig's intestine porridge. The combination of warm porridge and the crunchiness of the intestines has left me craving more.
Additionally, the restaurant is also famous for its chee cheong fun. While waiting, I noticed many customers ordering this dish, and I’ll be sure to try it next time.
