Unveiling the Other Side of Historical Tourism: Who's Telling the Story?

Recently, while traveling, I stumbled upon an intriguing realization: every cobblestone path has its own unique story. Tour guides, often equipped with a loudspeaker, regale visitors with thrilling tales, but unfortunately, those stories aren’t always accurate.

The truth is, the trend of cultural tourism is booming, with many seeking authentic connections to the past. However, in an age where misinformation can spread faster than the truth, we face a significant challenge: how to distinguish between skilled storytellers and charlatans.

Shifts in Storytelling

Take a look at how the U.S. government has removed historical facts from national parks to see how serious this issue has become. Former President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to assess how American history is portrayed at National Park Service sites. A recent example is the removal of an exhibit about President George Washington's ownership of slaves at the Independence National Historical Park.

More importantly, the battle over who gets to tell the story at these tourist attractions isn’t confined to the U.S. In Manchester, England, there’s been a clash among tour guides over accusations of content theft and harassment.

Research Before You Go

One story I heard from a tour guide with 24 years of experience at Gettysburg National Military Park emphasized the importance of thoroughly researching the guiding company you plan to hire. Every detail in the story matters. Gettysburg marks a pivotal moment in the American Civil War, where approximately 50,000 people lost their lives.

Therefore, becoming a guide here is no easy feat. They must pass a challenging exam to obtain their license, with only about 10% of candidates succeeding. Guides need to be able to convey the story clearly and engagingly.

The Quality of Guides

It’s clear that not everyone has the skills and knowledge to be an excellent guide. I met Geoff Levett, a historian in London, who also underwent a rigorous licensing process in his career. He explained that only guides with a Blue Badge are permitted to lead tours at locations like Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

These guides must develop the ability to speak in public under pressure, a significant challenge. Levett faced a stutter since childhood, which became his motivation to overcome personal hurdles.

Verifying Information and Training

Some places don’t require formal qualifications, but many guides still opt for rigorous training. For instance, Tyler Page Wright Friedman, owner of a tour company in Charleston, only hires guides who have passed a 500-page exam previously set by the city.

Friedman is committed to the guiding association’s standards, only employing certified individuals to ensure reliability for his guests.

Learning Before Booking a Tour

For Dr. Gerry Prokopowicz, a professor at East Carolina University, having a degree isn’t enough. He looks for guides with deep knowledge and extensive experience. The company he works for offers a recommended reading list for travelers before their trips.

Friedman does the same, providing guests with links to books, podcasts, and articles related to Charleston so they can delve deeper before and after their tour.

Addressing Doubts

However, sometimes there’s no website or review that can tell you everything you need to know. Will Cairns, owner of the tour company Active England, suggests doing a video call with the guide before booking a long tour to ensure you pick the right person.

In reality, there are some fantastic guides who truly align with travelers’ needs, and thorough research before you go will enhance your experience significantly.
