Napa Valley is more than just a wine region. From unique experiences for children to unexpected attractions, let's dive in!

Preparing for the Journey

As I got ready for our adventure to Napa Valley, I received numerous warnings about bringing my three kids along. While they had a point, I decided to take on the challenge anyway. Upon arriving at famous vineyards like Stag's Leap and Mumm, you’ll be greeted by picturesque views, but there’s little for young children to do. I love wine, but my kids don’t. Therefore, having a solid plan was essential.

A Special Stop: Castello di Amorosa

When we reached Castello di Amorosa, a castle located in Calistoga, everything seemed to transform. The drive to the castle winds through sprawling vineyards, and once you see the castle, it feels as if you’ve stepped into another world. The ancient stones make it look as if they were transported from Tuscany, Italy. The founder, Dario Sattui, built this place using old bricks salvaged from Habsburg palaces, with a vision that goes beyond the ordinary. He aimed to create a space where everyone could find joy and wonder.

Fun Wine Tasting Experience for Kids

During our tasting session at Castello, I discovered something delightful: they offer a special tasting set for kids. Three cups of grape juice were served by a professional sommelier, just like the wine adults were sampling. My little ones tasted different juices like Muscat Canelli and Gewürztraminer, quickly forming their own opinions about the flavors. The atmosphere here was far from the hushed silence of other tasting rooms; it was filled with laughter and excitement.

Joy and Surprises

My 11-year-old was so enthusiastic that he decided to join the wine club, albeit only for grape juice. This made him the youngest member of Castello di Amorosa. After the tasting, the kids couldn’t resist the allure of the intricately designed torture chamber, and I recommend letting them lead you through it—their enthusiasm is contagious!

Discovering Napa Beyond Wine

But Napa isn’t just about castles. Just 20 miles from Calistoga, there are many other attractions that might surprise you. One of them is Old Faithful, a real geyser in Calistoga, powered by an underground volcano. Then there's the Monticello Dam, home to the largest spillway in the world. The landscape here offers not just vineyards but also unexpected delights for the whole family.

Returning to Napa

There’s also a wildlife sanctuary near Santa Rosa called Safari West, where you can see giraffes roaming right beside your vehicle. It feels like stepping out of a fairy tale. Napa Valley taught me that sometimes, the best plans are the ones you don’t make.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

If you’re looking to experience Napa Valley, keep in mind that you don’t need a visa to enter the U.S. if you qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. The best time to visit Napa is from September to November when autumn brings vibrant colors and pleasant weather. Flight costs from Vietnam to San Francisco (SGN - SFO) range from 15 to 20 million VND, depending on the time of year. From SFO, you can rent a car and drive straight to Napa in about 1-2 hours.

I hope your journey to Napa is filled with delightful surprises and joy, just like our family experienced!
