Nasi Dulang Daun Pisang in Kajang is famous for its giant grilled squid and an array of flavorful sambals. Discover the delicious offerings and how to get there!

Introducing Nasi Dulang Daun Pisang

Located in the heart of Kajang, Nasi Dulang Daun Pisang is a fantastic spot for those who adore Malaysian cuisine, especially grilled squid. The eatery is conveniently situated across from a few houses and a parking lot, making it easy for visitors to find.

The menu is displayed on A4 posters showcasing various meal combinations. Interestingly, there are no specific prices listed for each dish; instead, it states 'ikut saiz,' meaning prices can vary depending on the size of the meal. When I ordered, the staff informed me that the price for the squid that day was 40 ringgit.

The Unique Flavor of Grilled Squid

I tried the Dulang Sotong Bakar priced at RM40, along with a glass of iced tea for RM4. Although the restaurant's name includes 'daun pisang' (banana leaf), the banana leaf only served as a base for the rice and half a shell. Instead, all other dishes were presented on brown wax paper in a purple tray.

I was particularly impressed by the three types of sambal: Sambal Belacan, Sambal Asam, and Sambal Ayam Penyet. Each offered a distinct flavor, but if you're a fan of spicy food, you might find them a bit mild. However, this makes the dishes more enjoyable for a broader audience.

A Culinary Experience at the Restaurant

The squid was larger than my hand, and after admiring it for a few moments, I was ready to dig in. Although I don't often order this dish at restaurants, the grilled squid here was cooked to perfection—tender and easy to cut with my hands. Each bite was a delightful experience.

The prices here also vary based on the daily seafood supply, indicating their commitment to freshness. The accompanying sauce was fantastic, although it may be a bit salty if eaten alone. The rice complemented the flavors of the dishes well, balancing the sweetness, saltiness, and spiciness of the sauce.

Helpful Information for Vietnamese Tourists

If you're planning to visit Kajang, note that the restaurant only accepts cash. So, make sure to withdraw money from an ATM before heading over. The prices depend on the portion sizes, so you might end up spending more than expected.

The best time to visit is around 11:30 AM to avoid the lunchtime rush. When I arrived, only a few tables were occupied, but by noon, the place started to fill up. The service was quick, and I received my order within 10 minutes.

For seafood lovers, Nasi Dulang Daun Pisang is definitely worth a visit if you're nearby. I will surely return if I get the chance to be in the area again.

Additional Notes

The ulam served alongside not only adds freshness but also helps cleanse the palate after indulging in the rich flavors of the dishes. One interesting detail was their unique way of slicing cucumbers, which left me curious about their technique.
