Dive into the world of Nasi Ulam, a unique herbal rice dish at Amoy Street Food Centre. Learn about its ingredients, culinary experience, and useful tips for Vietnamese travelers.
Overview of Nasi Ulam
Nasi Ulam is a distinctive herbal rice dish that’s quite rare in Singapore’s food centers. If you’re someone who enjoys exploring diverse cuisines, this is a must-try. This dish is typically made with cooled rice mixed with a variety of fresh herbs, offering a refreshing taste and health benefits for diners.
The Little Red Hen: The Place to Enjoy Nasi Ulam
The Little Red Hen, located at Amoy Street Food Centre and opened in August 2022, serves this unique Nasi Ulam. It’s the perfect spot to sample and savor this renowned dish, with prices starting at a reasonable S$8.50 for a serving.
Key Ingredients of Nasi Ulam
The Nasi Ulam here is prepared using a Malaysian recipe, featuring cooled rice mixed with herbs such as ginger flower, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric leaves, and Vietnamese basil. These herbs not only create a distinctive flavor but also provide numerous health benefits thanks to their antioxidant properties.
Experience Nasi Ulam at the Restaurant
I tried the Nasi Ulam alongside Ayam Percik and Beef Rendang, both priced at S$8.50. Each meal is served with urap salad or grilled vegetables, including broccoli, carrots, and bell peppers. Notably, there’s also a half-boiled egg and homemade sambal spread on the dish.
With up to 15 different herbs and ingredients used in Nasi Ulam, the dish is both diverse and rich. Upon tasting, I was met with the delightful crunch of the herbs, perfectly complementing the soft rice.

Review of Beef Rendang and Ayam Percik
The Beef Rendang was quite delicious, though not overly spicy, with a sweet flavor. This dish enhanced the herbal experience with its rich and sweet profile. However, the portion size seemed a bit small, but given the current beef prices, that’s somewhat understandable. On the other hand, the grilled vegetables didn’t leave a strong impression, appearing a bit mushy and not quite fitting with the meal.
The Flavor of Urap Salad
Instead of the grilled vegetables, I opted for the urap salad. This salad consists of bean sprouts, long beans, and grated coconut; while it looks simple, it offers a remarkably rich and diverse flavor. The seasoning of the grated coconut adds a distinct touch to the dish.
Conclusion
It’s hard to believe I went nearly 24 years without trying Nasi Ulam. This is truly a dish worth tasting and an unforgettable experience. While the main dish is exceptional, the accompanying items may not meet the same high standards. Considering the reasonable price relative to the ingredients and preparation effort, Nasi Ulam at The Little Red Hen is a fantastic experience for any food lover.
