A Natural Wonder

Niagara Falls is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in North America. Straddling the border between the United States and Canada, this trio of massive waterfalls—American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls—will leave you in awe with their grandeur and beauty. The American side boasts the oldest state park, while the Canadian side features a natural reserve.

Beyond the stunning waterfalls, the area is bustling with attractions, activities, and dining options. With most of my family living in Buffalo and Toronto, I have spent plenty of time exploring both cities. In fact, I've visited Niagara Falls so often that I could draw my own map—it's also the place where my parents got married!

Sharing My Visiting Experience

I prefer the Canadian side because it offers more activities, unique shops, beautiful photo spots, and towering hotels. However, I have spent more time on the American side since crossing the border is easier, and there are some lovely trails in the state park that are very close to the waterfalls, like the Maid of the Mist boat tour that takes you right to the base of the falls.

Don’t miss the Cave of the Winds, where visitors don ponchos and walk along pathways at the base of Bridal Veil Falls to experience the refreshing spray from the waterfall. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape into nature or want to enjoy the vibrant attractions at Clifton Hill in Ontario, I’ve got some tips to help you make the most of your trip your own way.

Getting to Niagara Falls

If you’re flying from Vietnam, the nearest airport is Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) in New York, which is about a 30-40 minute drive from the falls. To reach the Canadian side, you should consider Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), located about an hour and a half away. From there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle bus.

If you’re in Toronto, you can take the Go Train or Niagara AirBus from Toronto, Buffalo, and Niagara. Once you arrive, the WEGO bus system will take you to various attractions, while the Discover Niagara Shuttle and Niagara Scenic Trolley operate on the American side.

Can You Visit Both Sides in One Day?

Crossing between the two sides of the border takes just a few minutes during off-peak hours. However, be sure to have your documents ready, such as your passport. There are four main points for crossing into Canada: Peace Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, and if you're coming from Detroit, the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor.

On nice days, you can walk across the Rainbow Bridge, which is open 24/7, but make sure to check the customs hours. The walk takes only about 15-20 minutes, and the views from the bridge are absolutely stunning.

The Best Time to Visit

Niagara Falls is open year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Summer sees the highest number of visitors, allowing you to enjoy the bright sunshine, take the Maid of the Mist boat tour, and watch fireworks. Spring and fall provide cooler weather with blooming flowers or vibrant autumn leaves, perfect for scenic drives. Winter is chilly but beautifully serene, with a blanket of snow.

Should You Book a Tour When Visiting Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls is easy to explore on your own since the park is free to enter and has plenty of accessible viewpoints. However, if you want to delve deeper into the history, access special viewpoints, or participate in unique experiences like boat tours or walking through tunnels, booking a tour might be the better option. You can book a tour on the day of your visit, but it’s best to reserve in advance, especially during peak season.

Dining on the American Side of Niagara Falls

If you’re looking to enjoy dinner with a view, Top of the Falls Restaurant is one of the most popular spots. It serves classic American cuisine with stunning views of Horseshoe Falls. Currently, the restaurant is temporarily closed but is expected to reopen in 2026, so keep that in mind!

If you prefer a more intimate experience, try the Red Coach Inn, which offers a diverse menu in a romantic setting. Alternatively, you can visit the Anchor Bar, the birthplace of the famous Buffalo chicken wings.

Dining on the Canadian Side of Niagara Falls

Many hotels and restaurants near Niagara Falls on the Canadian side feature dining rooms with beautiful views. A fantastic option is Table Rock House Restaurant, where you can savor upscale dishes with local flavors. The Skylon Tower, with its revolving dining room, is also a fun destination for unique perspectives. If you enjoy craft beer, the Niagara Brewing Company is a great spot with live music in the evenings.

Where to Stay Near Niagara Falls

While there are some hotels on the American side, I recommend staying in Buffalo, New York, and driving about 30 minutes to Niagara Falls. A couple of great options include the Curtiss Hotel, which offers a luxurious style and is close to attractions, or The Mansion on Delaware Avenue, perfect for history lovers.

The boutique hotel Reikart House Buffalo is also an excellent choice with its artistic ambiance and opulent decor. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s an experience in itself.
