If you're on the lookout for an exciting destination beyond Tokyo or Kyoto, Niigata is a must-visit. Just under two hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo, Niigata stands out with its pristine natural beauty and rich culinary culture. Known as Japan's "rice country," Niigata is famous not only for its rice but also for its exceptional sake.

Visiting in winter, you'll be greeted by heavy snowfall, creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. I had the unforgettable experience of riding the Shinkansen while watching the snowflakes dance outside.

Fantastic Activities

While in Niigata, you can't miss the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, home to around 200 permanent art installations scattered across fields, forests, and abandoned houses. This community art project brings together artists and local residents in a creative collaboration.

Don't miss Kiyotsu Gorge, one of Japan's three largest gorges, featuring a stunning light tunnel designed by MAD architects, making it an ideal spot for photography. I visited in spring and was captivated by the ethereal beauty as sunlight streamed through the reflective mirrors.

Exploring Traditional Crafts

In Tsubame-Sanjo, the heart of Japan's metal industry, you can visit the Gyokusendo copper workshop, which has been in operation for over 200 years. I tried my hand at hammering a piece of copper into a bookmark and truly realized how challenging it is to create a perfect product.

You should definitely try walking on snow with traditional kanjiki snow shoes. This experience left me with unforgettable memories. Additionally, enjoying a tea session with kuromoji tea and sasadango (a type of red bean mochi) amidst the snowy scenery was a delightful treat.

Culinary Discoveries

The cuisine in Niigata is closely linked to its geography, particularly the renowned Koshihikari rice. At Satoyama Jūjō, the Michelin-starred restaurant run by chef Keiko Kuwakino, diners can enjoy seasonal dishes, highlighting rice cooked right before your eyes.

Even better, Tokiwazushi in Niigata City offers fresh seafood sushi that you simply cannot miss. For a cozy experience, Kiguchi and Koshuu Hanten are also excellent spots serving delicious izakaya dishes.

Sake Exploration

No trip to Niigata is complete without indulging in sake. I joined a tour at Aoki Sake Brewery, a 300-year-old establishment, where I witnessed the sake-making process from rice to finished product. Here, I also sampled various types of sake.

Riding the JR East Koshino Shu*Kura train is a unique experience, allowing you to enjoy sake on board. If you have the chance to visit Sado Island, be sure to participate in the overnight sake-making program at Obata Shuzo, a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
