First Impressions of Penang

I've called Penang my temporary home three times, spending a total of six months soaking in everything from the street food of George Town to the lush trails of the rainforest and the stunning beaches on the island. Each return visit deepens my love for the diverse beauty of this place. On this trip, I decided to venture beyond the bustling streets of George Town and uncover some hidden gems.

George Town: The Perfect Starting Point

If you’re kicking off your adventure in George Town, consider staying at the Rare Heritage House, a boutique hotel that exudes old-world charm. If you're on a tighter budget, Tido Hostel is a fantastic alternative that offers both affordability and a friendly atmosphere.

Exploring Penang Hill

I never need an excuse to climb a hill for a panoramic view, and Penang Hill is a must-visit on my list. From the summit, you’re treated to breathtaking sights: the narrow strait, iconic bridges, and the mainland town of Butterworth. It’s a perfect escape from the city’s heat, allowing you to breathe in the cool mountain air.

To get there, you can take bus number 204 from George Town to the funicular station. If you want to avoid the crowds, aim to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Hiking Adventure: Moon Gate Trail

If you’re up for a bit of adventure and want to challenge yourself, I recommend hiking instead of taking the cable car. My top pick is the Moon Gate Trail, which starts at the Botanical Gardens. This nature trail gives you a chance to spot birds and monkeys if you’re lucky.

The hike will take you about 2-3 hours to reach the summit, so be sure to start early to dodge the heat and potentially catch sight of wildlife in the morning.

Scenic Views at the Top of Penang Hill

Once you reach the top, don’t forget to visit the Hindu temple and the mosque. The main path will lead you to Café Monkey Cup, a perfect spot to relax with reasonably priced coffee and pastries.

You can also enjoy a treetop walking experience at The Habitat, which offers fantastic birdwatching opportunities. If you’re seeking a thrill, why not try the zipline?

Visiting Kek Lok Si Temple

After soaking in the views on Penang Hill, make sure to visit Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Southeast Asia. This temple is an important pilgrimage site and boasts stunning vistas from its pagoda and the Buddha statue.

The Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas and the Kuan Yin statue are two highlights you can’t miss here. Although it can get crowded at times, you’ll easily find quiet corners to soak in the spiritual atmosphere.
