DIY Popiah: A Unique Experience
When you go out to enjoy popiah, you usually find them already rolled up, ready to eat. But have you ever wondered what makes this experience special? At Good Chance Popiah in Bukit Merah, you can roll your own popiah, just like during the Lunar New Year celebrations. For me, popiah is always tied to family gatherings, so the chance to make my own brings back a wave of nostalgia.
Good Chance Popiah recreates that experience but with a delightful twist. The name of the restaurant, 好彩薄饼 (Hǎo cǎi báobǐng), literally means “lucky popiah”—and it’s a fitting name. Instead of taking the time to prepare for a popiah feast, this family-run establishment has done all the hard work for you. Having been around for three generations, they boast a loyal customer base!
Impressive Ambiance
The restaurant's interior is adorned with photos featuring the current owner, Mr. Boon Kaichun—affectionately known as Ah Boy—alongside various celebrities. Here, you’ll not only enjoy delicious food but also immerse yourself in a warm, family-friendly atmosphere rich with tradition.
Special Menu
When you visit a popiah spot, your first order is bound to be popiah. I tried the Good Chance Signature DIY Popiah (6 pieces) for S$26. Each ingredient is served on separate plates, allowing you to assemble your own masterpiece. According to the menu, the main ingredients include cabbage, radish, carrots, bamboo shoots, green onions, long beans, and shrimp.
The filling is flavorful and moist, although I found it a bit mushy and not as crunchy as I had hoped. I was pleasantly surprised to find soy sauce and pepper on the table, which turned out to be a peanut sauce and sweet sauce—absolutely delightful! If you’ve never made popiah before, Good Chance Popiah will guide you through the process step by step.

Rolling Skills
The staff here will assist you from ingredient selection to squeezing out excess moisture. Once you’ve rolled your popiah, dive right in! The flavors meld beautifully, and the crunch from the peanuts adds a satisfying touch. Personally, I recommend adding the XO Chinese Sausage (S$7.80) or Sliced Shrimp (S$9.80 for a small portion) to enhance your meal.
Other Must-Try Dishes
While observing nearby tables enjoying something that looked like fried dumplings, I decided to give it a try. I ordered a plate of hei zho, also known as DIY Prawn Cakes, priced at S$16.80 for a medium portion, which includes 8 pieces—perfect for sharing! Each piece is stuffed with mashed taro and a mixture of pork and shrimp.
With a crispy exterior that isn’t greasy, I found them utterly delightful. At first, I thought they were just small pieces of ngoh hiang, but they have a distinct and firmer flavor of their own. If you’re looking to choose just one side dish, this is definitely the standout option you shouldn't miss.
Final Thoughts
What makes Good Chance Popiah special is the DIY aspect of making your own popiah. This concept is genuinely fun: you get to create according to your preferences in a festive atmosphere reminiscent of family gatherings. However, I felt that the price mainly reflects the experience rather than the quality of the food. While the dishes aren’t bad, I still felt they lacked that special something that would draw me back.
But if you find yourself in a pinch, truly missing the process of rolling popiah with friends or family, Good Chance Popiah is a fantastic place to visit!
