Hearing someone speak English initially bothered me, as tourists typically flock to the lively bars in Itaewon, while locals like me prefer the cozy, laid-back atmosphere of Jongno's bars. These places are more than just bars; they are fun and welcoming spaces.

Head to Jongno for Exploration

If you're in Seoul and want to immerse yourself in the local LGBT culture, make sure to explore Jongno, especially on Saturday nights. From Jongno 3-ga station (lines 1, 3, and 5), you can easily access iconic sites like Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung palaces.

Bars in Jongno, such as Friends, have been around since 2004 and are among the oldest establishments for the LGBT community in Korea. Before dating apps became popular, Donhwamunro 11-gil was a hub for "pocha" bars selling soju and snacks, attracting a predominantly gay clientele.

The Bar Culture in Jongno

Today, while the number of straight visitors to Jongno has increased, the area still retains its unique cultural identity. One distinctive feature of Jongno bars is their traditional rectangular signs, which are small and modest. This design allows them to stand the test of time, unlike larger, flashier signs that have taken over elsewhere.

If you're on the lookout for the right bar, pay attention to the English names, like My Hunk or Dive. These spots often have a small capacity, accommodating only about five people, creating an intimate atmosphere for friends from all walks of life.

The LGBT Community: Joys and Concerns

There was a time when the LGBT community in Jongno thrived, but now areas like Ikseondong have become overly commercialized, losing their charm and authentic interaction. Once a peaceful haven for LGBT individuals, Ikseondong has transformed into a shopping district filled with craft shops and Western eateries, leading more straight visitors to flock to Jongno Pocha Street.

Despite this, Jongno's popularity remains intact; it continues to be one of the safest spaces for the LGBT community. Friends bar, where I often hang out, welcomes everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. This inclusivity is crucial, as not all LGBT spaces in Jongno share the same open-mindedness.

Comparing with Itaewon

If you're seeking a more inclusive atmosphere with foreigners, Itaewon is a solid choice. This area is famous for Homo Hill, a concentration of gay bars and clubs. However, it's undeniable that many Korean husbands prefer Jongno, where they feel more comfortable and secure within their community.

The difference between the two areas lies in the social environment. In Itaewon, visitors easily find fun and openness, while Jongno offers a sense of connection and understanding for those living in a society still bound by traditional gender norms.

Tips for Visiting

Before you plan your trip to Jongno, keep in mind that this space values privacy highly. Going with queer friends will enhance your sense of safety, and it's important to be polite when interacting with others. Though friendly and close-knit, the community is cautious about welcoming outsiders into their space.

Be prepared for engaging yet sometimes anxious conversations about adapting to life in Seoul. A visit to Jongno not only allows you to explore LGBT culture but also serves as a journey of self-discovery in a vibrant, modern city.

Finally, remember that engaging with and connecting to the community is the most important aspect. If you get the chance, seek out a small bar where you can share your own stories and experiences. Jongno will not disappoint!
