Unique Experiences in Tokyo

If you think you’ve seen all the oddities Tokyo has to offer, you haven’t yet discovered Veganic Monkey Magic. After strolling past cosplay cafes and watching Pikachu impersonators dash around Akihabara, I thought I had encountered it all. However, stepping into Veganic Monkey Magic, where a chef dressed in a full monkey costume prepares the most exquisite vegan dishes, made me realize that Tokyo is indeed a land of boundless creativity.

A Magical Vegan Menu

Located in Asakusa, Veganic Monkey Magic is a kaiseki-style vegan restaurant nestled within the Oyado Matsumura inn. With only seven seats available, reservations are absolutely essential. Dinner here costs around 6,800 JPY and is served from Thursday to Saturday. You’ll enjoy a tasting menu of 10-14 dishes, depending on the ingredients available that week.

The mastermind behind this magical menu, Chef Monkey-san, handles everything herself—from preparation and cooking to serving—all while dressed in her unique monkey outfit. She uses high-quality ingredients sourced from around the globe, skillfully transforming them with her incredible fermentation techniques.

A Surprising Vegan Culinary Journey

The dinner begins with a velvety carrot potage infused with wild oregano from Italy, followed by a hearty vegan hot pot filled with tofu, mushrooms, and fresh greens. You’ll have about ten minutes to wait as the dish simmers to perfection. Additionally, some delightful bites like bread with pâté and pani puri stuffed with yogurt and veggies surprised me with their fantastic flavors.

Perhaps the boldest dish was the monaka paired with natto; its pungent aroma and sticky texture might be off-putting for some. However, the addition of banana made it much more palatable. Next came marinated tofu and onions soaked in sake and soy sauce, followed by a "grilled vegan meat" made from konjac and tempeh sourced from Nagano.

Another surprise was the daikon "steak" served with homemade tartar sauce. Finally, the dish of sautéed jackfruit with burdock and onions drizzled with red wine sauce was equally intriguing.

The Monkey Artisan in the Kitchen

Chef Monkey-san, also known as "Chef Sarucchaman," impresses not only with her diverse menu but also with her skill and dedication. While everyone notices her monkey costume, it’s her talent in crafting each dish that truly stands out.

Honestly, it’s rare to find a dining experience where both the host and the style are so uniquely captivating. Each dish is not just a meal but a piece of art, making it an unforgettable experience.
