On a quest for sunshine in Toulouse, I explored the Airbus factory and museum—an unforgettable experience for aviation enthusiasts.

Why Toulouse?

This year, the weather in the UK has been drearier than usual, prompting me to head south in search of sunshine and warmth. Initially, I planned to visit the French Riviera, but the weather there was unstable during my travel week. Ultimately, Toulouse emerged as a viable option with three to four days of sunshine.

Additionally, Toulouse is renowned for the Airbus factory and the Aeroscopia Museum, making it an ideal destination for aviation lovers like me. British Airways operates three flights daily to Toulouse, and being in the off-peak season, booking a round-trip ticket was quite easy and affordable.

The Flight to Toulouse

I flew from Heathrow Airport, departing from Terminal 3. The check-in process was swift, with more check-in machines than passengers. After securing my boarding pass, I dropped off my carry-on luggage. Security was also quite efficient; everything could stay in my bag, except for a metal water bottle that caused a bit of trouble.

When it was time to board, Heathrow didn’t announce the gate until shortly after 12:30 for my 1:15 PM flight. Looking around, I only spotted a few planes from Virgin, Delta, and American Airlines. After enjoying a salad, I found an empty gate near an Airbus A380 to wait.

Flight Troubles

At Gate 9, I encountered a crowd waiting in line that wasn’t moving. These areas had glass enclosures and no restrooms inside, so there weren’t enough seats for all the passengers. I stood waiting, feeling a bit uneasy.

Then an announcement came that our original aircraft was overloaded with fuel, so we would be switching to a plane at the adjacent gate. Staff opened a door in the enclosed area for everyone to move to the new gate. We were delayed by 30 minutes and informed that there wasn’t enough food on the plane, necessitating a return to the original aircraft for more supplies.

The Journey to Toulouse

Shortly after, a team of staff arrived on the new plane with trays of food and drinks. Each person carried at least ten trays, likely enough for the round trip. We learned that the initial plane was two-thirds full due to another flight cancellation, making it unusable as we would land in Toulouse overweight. Despite the new plane being packed with passengers, there was no scramble for overhead space, and everyone behaved quite civilly.

The legroom on this A320 was a bit cramped, but tolerable for the 1-hour and 20-minute flight. Additionally, we were informed that extra food orders hadn’t been loaded onto the plane, so we only received a light snack and a complimentary bottle of water. We finished boarding at 1:50 PM and took off at 2:08 PM, nearly an hour late.

Exploring Toulouse

The journey was quite long, and we took off at 2:31 PM. I didn’t have a window seat, so I spent my time watching YouTube and playing games on my phone until the plane began its descent. We safely landed in Toulouse at 4:51 PM, which is an hour ahead of London. The airport looked quite nice, and the non-Schengen arrival area was very quiet since only our flight had arrived at that time.

Toulouse is the heart of the aerospace industry, with over 56,000 employees working for Airbus here. All production parts are scattered across Europe, with Toulouse serving as the headquarters and assembly location. The fuselage is made in Hamburg, wings in St. Nazaire or Broughton, and other components in Bremen.

Aeroscopia Museum

While in Toulouse, I couldn’t miss the Aeroscopia Museum, which showcases many famous aircraft and their histories. The museum features both indoor and outdoor exhibits, and I combined my museum visit with a tour of the Airbus factory, which requires advance booking and has a separate fee. The aircraft I saw there were truly impressive, including the Super Guppy, two Concordes, the A300B, and the A380, which you can explore inside.

Everything promised to be fascinating, and I had a wonderful experience exploring the land of Airbus.
