Discover Winnipeg - Canada's City of Surprises

Winnipeg is not just one of the top cities to visit in Canada; it also stands out with its unexpected beauty and memorable experiences. Nestled in the heart of the Canadian plains, this city offers a wealth of exciting adventures that everyone should explore when the opportunity arises. From getting up close with polar bears at Assiniboine Park Zoo to immersing yourself in art and culture at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, you’ll quickly understand why Winnipeg is one of Canada’s most underrated destinations.

Must-See Experiences in Winnipeg

Winnipeg is renowned for its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant arts scene. Whether you're a nature lover, a sports fan, or a history buff, this city has something for everyone. After several visits, I’ve narrowed down eight unmissable experiences to enjoy in Winnipeg. Pro tip: Plan to spend at least three days to fully embrace all that this city has to offer.

1. Meet Polar Bears at Assiniboine Park Zoo

There are only a few places in the world where you can see real polar bears, and Manitoba is home to one of them, near the northern community of Churchill, MB. However, you can also spot polar bears in Winnipeg! The Assiniboine Park Zoo features a permanent exhibit called “Journey to Churchill.” Here, you can participate in interactive activities, enjoy indoor and outdoor play areas for kids, and learn about the impacts of climate change on the Arctic tundra.

The highlight is the underwater tunnel known as the “Sea Ice Passage.” If you're lucky, a polar bear might swim right above you while you’re inside! There’s also a fantastic observation area to watch the seals, who love to interact and often swim right up to the glass before sliding down playfully. The bears you see in the park are orphans, and the zoo provides them with a safe haven since they cannot return to the wild. Their commitment to conservation and research is commendable, aiming “to enhance the lives of the animals in their care while supporting conservation efforts in the wild.”

2. Explore The Leaf at Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park has much more to offer, so be sure to dedicate a full day to exploring it. If you love nature, visiting The Leaf at Assiniboine Park is a must. With its unique architecture, you might feel like you’ve stepped into Singapore, but it’s right here in Winnipeg. The Leaf is a stunning botanical garden that spans 30 acres.

In the summer, it bursts with vibrant flowers, and in winter, it transforms into a perfect winter retreat. The building is designed in the shape of a nautilus shell and a sunflower, featuring glass windows that create an open space from inside to outside. Here, you’ll find four different ecosystems and six gardens, including a koi pond and a butterfly garden. Notably, it houses Canada’s largest indoor waterfall, soaring nearly 60 feet. From the elevated walkway, you’ll capture beautiful photos to share on Instagram.

3. Unwind at Thermea Spa

I can’t forget to mention Thermea by Nordik Spa-Nature. While you’ll need a day to explore Assiniboine Park, you should also carve out a day for this spa (ideally towards the end of your trip for maximum relaxation). This spa is based on the concept of hydrotherapy and relaxation techniques: hot, cold, and rest.

You can relax in the sauna (dry or wet), enjoy a refreshing waterfall shower, and then lounge in a hammock or sunbed by the fireplace, in the restaurant, or in a nap room. Repeat as many times as you wish! The spa prohibits phones and cameras, allowing you to truly enjoy the serene atmosphere. There are plenty of cozy nooks to sit back and unwind. The spa also offers massages and other treatments, but I highly recommend experiencing the Ritual Aufguss (free with entrance). Water and snow are poured onto hot stones in the sauna, and the attendant uses a towel to create a wonderfully fragrant atmosphere.

4. Visit the Winnipeg Art Gallery

At Qaumajug (“it is bright, it is radiant”) in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, you’ll find the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art. A standout feature is a three-story curved glass chamber showcasing 5,000 Inuit sculptures. There’s even a glass floor that allows you to look down at the levels below. Qilak, the main gallery on the third floor, spans 8,000 square feet and is not to be missed. This space reflects the natural environment of the North and is adorned with many beautiful Inuit artworks.

5. Explore the Canadian Museum for Human Rights

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is one of the most moving museums you’ll ever visit. This museum focuses solely on the development, celebration, and future of human rights. Despite the many dark moments in history, there is always light somewhere. This theme is evident in the architectural design of the museum as you ascend from the main floor to eight stories high, reaching the observation deck that is filled with light and offers stunning views of the city.

6. Visit FortWhyte Alive

If you want to escape city life, FortWhyte Alive is the perfect spot for a nature getaway right in the city. Spanning 660 acres, it features trails for canoeing, walking, and biking. In the fall, you can witness the migration of thousands of geese as they stop at Devonian Lake to rest for the night.

7. Catch a Professional Sports Game

Winnipeg is home to the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers since 1930, and they welcomed back the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets in 2011. Even if you’re not a sports fan, consider grabbing a ticket. The exciting atmosphere of a game is worth the experience.

I attended my first Jets game, which was also the season opener! I was impressed by the in-game experience and the enthusiasm of the fans. Enjoy local food and cheer for the home team. Even if you’re not from the city, you’ll receive a warm welcome here.

Conclusion

Winnipeg truly is a city filled with intriguing and surprising experiences waiting for you. Get ready to discover all the wonderful things this city has to offer!
