If you're on the fence about whether to embark on an adventure in Yucatán, worry not! This guide has all the information you need. I’ve explored Yucatán by both renting a car and using public transport, allowing me to compare both options. While some areas in Mexico can be risky, the Yucatán Peninsula stands out as a clear exception: it boasts high security and driving is (usually) quite easy. Though there are a few important things to know before you set off, this region is perfect for a road trip.

Traveling through Yucatán is genuinely easy for most visitors, including families (we recently took our 4-year-old daughter along). However, I’m sure you have plenty of questions about how to navigate and the best places to explore—so let’s dive in!

Benefits of Renting a Car

If you want to truly delve into Yucatán, a road trip is definitely the way to go. Not only does it give you maximum freedom, but it also saves you from the hassle of catching an early bus or waiting for a taxi in remote areas. Many bus stops and train stations along the Maya Train route are located on the outskirts of towns and cities, requiring an additional taxi ride to reach your main destination. With a car, you can easily move from one spot to another at your own pace.

I love the spontaneous stops along the way to stretch my legs or take a break. We enjoyed the most delicious and affordable chilaquiles at a roadside eatery in Leona Vicario, completely free of tourists. Stopping in the small town of Tizimín, we were pleasantly surprised by its beautiful squares and interesting architecture, featuring a towering 16th-century monastery. These types of places might not be top tourist destinations, but they are genuinely delightful to visit.

Cost of Renting a Car

Renting a car can also be quite economical. On my recent trip, I paid around $15 for a Chevrolet Onix. To find deals like this, a little searching goes a long way. I discovered this great option through Discover Cars. Compared to taking a bus from Cancun to Tulum, which costs about $25 per person, having your own vehicle is a more cost-effective choice, especially if you're traveling with a group or family.

There are many car rental companies scattered across the peninsula, including in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid, and Merida. You can also easily choose to rent a car for just part of your trip for added convenience.

Experiencing Yucatán

I’ve done a road trip through much of Mexico and know that some areas can be quite wild. However, driving in Yucatán is rather… uneventful. This isn’t a bad thing; in fact, the straight roads can be quite comforting. The Yucatán Peninsula is relatively flat, meaning most roads are direct. While this may seem monotonous, it makes driving very easy.

Beyond the tree-lined roads, you’ll frequently pass fields or mangroves, so there’s no need to worry about the scenery. A road trip in Yucatán isn’t about breathtaking landscapes; it’s about enjoying the convenience and flexibility to explore wherever you wish.

Interesting Spots in Yucatán

The peninsula is dotted with intriguing sights. Many locations are off-limits to those who only travel by bus or organized tours, including peaceful hidden cenotes (natural sinkholes for swimming) and majestic Maya ruins where you may feel almost alone while exploring (no, Chichen Itza isn’t the only option and certainly not the best!). Being able to go anywhere at any time opens up a world of opportunities to escape the crowds and experience a more authentic Yucatán.

Driving Safety Tips

If you’re wondering whether driving in Yucatán is safe, I can assure you it’s one of the safest areas in Mexico. Unless you do something foolish, you won’t need to worry much about crime, especially in the peaceful state of Yucatán. To put it in perspective, Merida is much safer than many large cities in the U.S. and Europe.

However, road safety deserves attention, particularly because some aspects of driving in Mexico can be quite different from what you’re used to. I’ve noticed that most Mexican drivers follow the rules and are courteous, yielding to one another and properly warning about upcoming hazards like obstacles.

Driving Considerations in Yucatán

Roads in Yucatán are generally well-maintained, especially highways and main roads. Smaller roads leading to villages or hidden cenotes may have many potholes. Route 307 from Cancun to Tulum, although a main road, can be congested with trucks and heavy traffic, creating a stressful experience right after leaving Cancun airport (if that’s where your journey begins). After the Cancun-Tulum corridor, traffic thins out, making driving less tense.

While traffic isn’t overly chaotic, some behaviors can be quite unpredictable compared to what you’re used to. It’s best to drive cautiously and maintain a safe distance. Mexico drives on the right side, which can be a significant change if you’re accustomed to driving on the left. If that’s the case, take it slow at first as you adjust.

Always be on the lookout for obstacles (topes), those unexpected speed bumps that can be hard to spot. Don’t underestimate the danger of these bumps! They are everywhere and can sometimes jolt you into a pothole. In the early days of your trip, be very attentive to avoid straining your vehicle's suspension.

Don’t forget to check for traffic signs indicating upcoming obstacles. If you see signs indicating you’re approaching a village, that’s a sign there will be speed bumps ahead—this information isn’t always clearly stated. When you see the words "urban area" or "welcome," be prepared for what’s to come.
