Unexpected Challenges at Lisbon Airport
A reader recently reached out to share his frustrating experience of missing a flight due to excessively long security lines, ultimately forcing him to buy a new ticket. It sounds incredibly unfair, doesn’t it? Let’s dive into this story together.
Details of the Airport Experience
This reader recounted his transit through Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport. On March 26, he flew from Brussels to Lisbon and then on to Marrakech, holding a business class ticket paid for in cash. His girlfriend was on the same flight, but she was traveling with a reward ticket from the Aeroplan program. The flight from Brussels to Lisbon went smoothly, and they enjoyed a restful night in between.
The next morning, with their flight to Marrakech scheduled for 9:20 AM, they arrived at the airport by 7:00 AM—more than two hours before departure. With boarding passes in hand and no checked baggage, they breezed through security. However, when they reached the passport control area, they were met with a massive crowd waiting in line. Initially, they thought it would take about 30 minutes, but in reality, the wait stretched close to two hours.
Security Line Troubles
While waiting, they tried to catch the attention of airport staff to inform them about their impending flight. Finally, about 10 minutes before their departure time, they managed to get through the passport control, but it was too late. The gate had closed by the time they arrived. They were directed out of the terminal to the ticket counter.
What frustrated him the most was that TAP only allowed him, a paying business class passenger, to purchase a new ticket for a flight two days later. Luckily, he managed to book an EasyJet flight and made it to Marrakech. Interestingly, the next TAP flight arrived just five minutes before the EasyJet flight, and he even ran into a few fellow passengers from the passport control line.

A Problem That Needs Addressing
Everyone understands that arriving at the airport early is the passenger’s responsibility, and airlines can’t control security situations. But the question remains: what is a reasonable limit? Despite arriving more than two hours prior, they were still caught up in the lengthy wait.
While the exact cause is unknown, it’s clear that there is a serious issue at Lisbon Airport. Many other passengers on his flight faced similar challenges. Is there anything in TAP's policies or European regulations that requires airlines to assist passengers who miss flights due to such circumstances?
Are There Any Solutions?
When I hear stories like this, I often think that perhaps passengers didn’t plan well enough. If someone arrives just 40 minutes before departure and misses their flight due to long lines, it’s hard to feel too sorry for them. But in this case, the passenger arrived over two hours early with only carry-on luggage, which is the minimum time one should arrive for a flight—unless a sudden issue arises that the airline has warned about.
While an airline can’t be held responsible for security lines, they shouldn’t have a policy that forces passengers to buy a new ticket if they miss their flight. This is also a matter within the control of the government, as both the airport and the airline are state-operated. If long security lines become a common problem, airlines should proactively warn passengers ahead of time.
Lessons Learned
This might be one of those rare situations where I’m at a loss for advice. No one wants to experience such an ordeal, but we must accept that in the airline industry, especially in Europe, passengers often struggle when they miss flights. Perhaps when traveling from Lisbon in the morning, it’s wise to arrive at the airport five hours early to avoid any hassle.
If the sight of long lines persists at the airport, is there a way to resolve it? The reality is that passengers like this gentleman did nothing wrong, and they absolutely deserve more than just being forced to buy a new ticket. Hopefully, authorities will make improvements soon so that no one else has to face a similar situation.
And if you’re planning to fly from Lisbon, don’t forget to check the security line wait times to plan your schedule accordingly!
