First Impressions of Zhangjiajie
When it comes to Zhangjiajie, many of you might recognize the name as it served as the breathtaking backdrop for the famous movie Avatar. I couldn't resist the allure of this place, having visited it twice, nearly a decade apart. Whether you go in the morning or afternoon, the mountains here are stunning, especially when the clouds hover just below the peaks.
This area is filled with countless trails where you can stroll and enjoy the fresh air while avoiding the crowds. And it’s not just about the mountains; there are many other fascinating spots nearby, such as Tianmen Mountain and the ancient town of Fenghuang. Just staying here is enough to rejuvenate the soul. However, a heads up: the maps and directions can be quite complicated, and I found myself lost a few times even on my second visit.
Accommodation in Zhangjiajie
Upon arriving in Zhangjiajie, you have two main options for accommodation: Wulingyuan Town near the national park and the city of Zhangjiajie. If you're keen on exploring the forest, Wulingyuan is the best choice. It’s just a 30-minute drive from the park and offers a range of hotels from budget to luxury.
If you plan to visit Tianmen Mountain and other nearby attractions, consider spending one or two nights in Zhangjiajie city. This location is convenient as it’s close to both the train station and the airport, making it a transportation hub for the region.

Must-See Attractions in Zhangjiajie
First on the list is taking the cable car up to Tianzi Mountain. I highly recommend this option to soak in the breathtaking views from above. The cable car ticket costs around 72 CNY (about 10 USD). If you can, arrive early right when the gates open to avoid long lines.
Next up is the Helong Park at the summit of Tianzi Mountain. This is the top viewpoint with numerous beautiful perspectives. The two highlights are the Emperor's Brush and the Fairyland Peaks. If you're a photography enthusiast, this is the perfect moment to catch the sunrise.
Getting Around and Exploring Further
After exploring Tianzi Mountain, hop on a bus to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Here, you can wander around and visit spots like Tianmen Cave for stunning views.
Getting around is quite convenient. Inside the park, you can use buses or cable cars to easily access various attractions. You can purchase individual tickets for these modes of transport based on your itinerary and stops.
Essential Tips Before Visiting Zhangjiajie
The best time to visit Zhangjiajie is from March to May and September to November. The weather during these months is pleasant, and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes for walking, and be prepared for the weather, which can change unexpectedly.
The entrance fee to the park allows you to explore for four consecutive days, but if you have a short trip, make sure to prioritize the highlights to save time. Be mentally prepared for the crowds, as this place is always bustling with tourists, even during the off-peak season.
