Sipping on a mango smoothie at one of the cliffside restaurants, I gazed down at the pristine beach below. The feeling of safety and familiarity in a country once considered dangerous made everything feel different. From the stunning sunsets over the famous pig-shaped rocks to the vibrant surf culture, El Tunco is a place that beckons you to return. Essentially, this town isn't your typical Central American tourist hotspot; it feels like one of those hidden gems before they become “discovered.”

Getting to El Tunco
El Salvador may not have an Atlantic coastline, but it compensates with breathtaking beaches along the Pacific, like El Tunco. The journey from San Salvador to El Tunco is a breeze, taking just about an hour by bus for less than $2. Look for bus 102A, which departs every 20 minutes.
When I traveled from Juayúa, where I had been exploring the Flower Route, it took me over two hours to reach El Tunco. The route followed El Salvador's Highway 2, showcasing stunning scenery reminiscent of California's Highway 1. The winding roads and beautiful ocean views were unforgettable.
Where to Stay in El Tunco
To be honest, El Tunco isn't the most budget-friendly destination, but with a little planning, you can find reasonable accommodations. Many places fill up quickly, especially among surfers looking for affordable and no-frills lodging.
I arrived late and needed a place that could accommodate my dog, but my options were quite limited. In the end, I chose to stay at a family-run hostel a bit away from the center. It really challenged my standards, but it wasn’t too bad since it was only a 10-minute walk to the beach.
Exciting Activities in El Tunco
El Tunco offers a plethora of activities ranging from surf lessons to vibrant nightlife, and it also serves as a perfect base to explore other coastal towns and hidden waterfalls. Among all the experiences, I believe watching the sunset is the most memorable.
The sunsets in El Tunco are truly extraordinary, with the rocks changing colors as the sun dips below the horizon. I’ve always claimed that sunsets in Africa are the most beautiful, but El Tunco gives them a run for their money. It’s not just a visual treat; the sense of community as people gather to witness the sunset is something special.

Having never surfed before, I couldn’t resist the urge to try it out in a famous surf town like El Tunco. I signed up for a surf lesson, and it turned out to be an incredible experience!
