When I arrived in Zhangjiajie, one stop I absolutely had to make was Fenghuang Ancient Town. I had heard so much about this riverside gem, with its cobblestone alleys and ancient wooden stilt houses. And honestly, experiencing it in person revealed that its allure is more than just talk.
Must-See Highlights
Wander the Winding Cobblestone Streets
This town dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1556) and is home to the Miao and Tujia ethnic groups. I spent over five hours strolling through the charming, pebble-paved paths, feeling as if I had stepped back in time. The stunning wooden houses along the river, each piece of architecture telling its own story, truly captivated me.
Watch the Town Light Up from Nan Hua Bridge
Remember this: as the sun sets, Fenghuang Ancient Town transforms into a scene straight out of a Studio Ghibli film. Lanterns reflect on the water, and the stilt houses glow softly, creating an enchanting atmosphere. From Nan Hua Bridge, I could take in the breathtaking view of the town illuminated in lights—this is an experience you simply cannot miss.
Challenge Yourself on Tuojiang Stone Bridge
This was an exhilarating experience as I stepped from one stone to another, with the crystal-clear Tuojiang River flowing beneath me. The thrill was palpable as I watched others doing the same, sharing in the excitement.

Stroll Along the Ancient City Wall
Fenghuang Ancient Town was once protected by city walls and watchtowers. Although not entirely intact, the remnants of the walls still sparked excitement in me. For just 5 yuan, you can enter and enjoy panoramic views of the town from above.
