I fell in love with France during my trip to Bordeaux in 2010. Back then, friends I had met in Thailand took me around the city, and I was captivated by French culture. My first impressions were all about the food, the wine, and the wonderful people. But it was when I stepped out of the Paris metro and set foot on the Champs Élysées that I truly became enchanted. The lights, the vibrant atmosphere, and the mystique of Paris touched my heart. From that moment on, Paris officially held my heart.

A Plan to Change My Environment

After spending a few months in Paris in 2019, I began to consider making this city my permanent home, especially after feeling disillusioned with the high cost of living and the dating scene in New York. With the rise of AI threatening my job and the creative industry changing rapidly, Paris seemed like a better fit. The cost of living is lower than in New York, I already had friends here, and I had long wanted to learn French. This city would be a fantastic base for exploring Europe and continuing to write my new book.

Elevating My Dream of France

I researched the process of moving to France and discovered there are four main types of visas: student visa, long-stay visitor visa, entrepreneur talent visa, and talent visa. The student visa is straightforward; you simply need to enroll in a full-time university program and prove you have at least 600 euros per month for living expenses. I opted for the long-stay visitor visa (VLS-TS visiteur). While it doesn’t allow you to work legally, if you have passive income or retirement savings, you can live in France indefinitely.

The Journey to Obtain a Long-Stay Visa

The application process for this visa was not as complicated as I had feared. The most important thing is to prove you have accommodation for 90 days and sufficient income to support yourself. I meticulously prepared all my documents: the visa application, appointment confirmation, passport photos, proof of accommodation, a letter stating I wouldn’t be working, an explanation letter for my move, and details of my income. Tip: Bring extra supporting documents like bank statements and tax reports; while not mandatory, they can enhance your chances of success.

Concerns About Working Legally

Even though this visa doesn’t permit formal employment, many creatives and digital nomads still manage to obtain it. Personal Insights and Considerations

The biggest challenge has been maintaining an income while not being able to work in France. I was very careful in applying for this visa, with support from several friends who had successfully navigated the process before.
