Hiking the Geisler Alm via the Adolf Munkel Trail: An Unforgettable Adventure in the Dolomites
The hike along the Adolf Munkel Trail (or Adolf Munkelweg) to Geisler Alm is one of the most amazing experiences I've had during my trip to the Dolomites! We started and ended our journey at Zanser Alm, following a circular route through lush pine forests, meadows, bubbling streams, and even some charming little waterfalls. Along the way, we encountered leisurely cows and wild horses!
Quick Trail Information
- Trail Name: Adolf Munkel Trail (Adolf Munkelweg), No. 35
- Length: Approximately 9 km
- Duration: 3-4 hours
- Elevation Gain: 400-455 meters
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Trail Type: Loop
- Starting Point: Zanser Alm
- Dog-Friendly: Yes (I saw plenty of adorable dogs!)
- Family-Friendly: Yes, but not suitable for strollers
Getting to Geisler Alm
To reach the starting point, you can park at the lot near Zanser. Most trails begin from here. I paid 10 EUR for parking (cash only), and if you're in a camper van, it's 16 EUR. It's best to arrive a bit early!
I chose to hike clockwise and recommend that you do the same. Starting this way allows you to experience a more diverse landscape, from crystal-clear streams to stunning viewpoints and forested areas. A little further along the trail, you'll reach Geisler Alm, which is the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy some delicious Kaiserschmarrn.
Hiking Experience
The feeling of starting the hike to Geisler Alm was fantastic—walking alongside the stream with majestic mountains towering behind (even though they were later obscured by clouds). The forest section was incredibly peaceful, with large moss-covered rocks and vibrant greenery all around. Although the sky was cloudy, the occasional reveal of the mountain peaks added a mystical quality to the scenery. On a clear day, it would undoubtedly be even more stunning.
As you follow the gravel path winding around the pine trees, you'll arrive at intersections with towering peaks. If you want to explore more hiking trails in the Dolomites, my favorite is the climb to Tre Cime.
Mountain Huts Along the Way
Once you exit the forest, you'll encounter three mountain huts along the route. By this point, we were quite hungry, and these huts are great places to rest or grab a quick bite. Geisler Alm was my favorite due to its stunning location, comfortable wooden benches, and delicious food (more info below).
- Gschnagenhardt Alm: Less crowded, serving traditional dishes like Schlutzkrapfen (stuffed pasta).
- Dusler Alm: A cozy, quiet hut perfect for resting.
Helpful Tips
Mountain huts in the Dolomites often have rest days or close during certain seasons. Be sure to check the opening hours of the hut you plan to visit to ensure it's open.
Geisler Alm - The Highlight of the Trip
Also known as Rifugio delle Odle, Geisler Alm was the main reason we chose this hike! Even on a cloudy day, the scenery here was enchanting under the Geisler peaks. Comfortable wooden chairs are scattered around the hut, perfect for lounging and soaking in the views. I spent an hour just admiring the beauty—it was absolutely worth it!
You can also bring snacks and have a little picnic here. However, the food at the hut is fantastic too (check out their menu here). I ordered the following for lunch:
✈️ Tìm chuyến bay giá tốt
Đặt vé ngay với giá ưu đãi từ các hãng hàng không
- Kaiserschmarrn: Sweet, shredded pancake that is a must-try!
- Vegetable omelet: Served with hot chocolate to keep warm.
There's nothing quite like the amazing atmosphere at these rifugios. Great service and the chance to relax alongside fellow hikers amidst beautiful scenery.
How to Get to Geisler Alm
The best way to get here is by car. Just drive to the Zanser parking lot and start your hike from there. The parking fee is 10 EUR per day, 16 EUR for camper vans, and payment is cash only.
I recommend renting a car in Italy through Sunny Cars, which offers free cancellation and insurance included. Book your car here.
Public Transportation Options
I also noticed public buses operating in the area, so if you don't have your own vehicle, you can still reach the Puez-Geisler Nature Park via public transport. If you're coming from afar, take a train to Klausen or Brixen, then catch a bus to the Villnöss Valley (Val di Funes, your destination). Bus line 330 runs hourly to the Zans parking area (except in November and April).
If you're coming from Ortisei or nearby towns, you can take the same bus route to the parking lot. No need to book in advance on the bus. Be sure to check the schedule before you go and select St. Magdalena (Villnöss)/Zanser Alm as your destination.
Where to Stay Near Geisler Alm
The Odle mountain group is located in the western Dolomites. Anywhere in this area is a great place to stay. Many choose hotels in St. Magdalena (the closest), Klausen (Chiusa), or Ortisei (about an hour's drive away).
Some of my favorite hotels in Ortisei include:
- Casa al Sole Ortisei
- Residence Villa Stella Ortisei
- B&B Villa Angelino Ortisei
- Cësa Marmolada 1318 Ortisei
I stayed at Casa al Sole in Ortisei during the first half of my Dolomites journey. It’s a boutique accommodation located in the town center, run by a lovely couple, and includes breakfast.
Best Time to Visit Geisler Alm
The ideal time to visit Geisler Alm is from late June to September, when the weather is warm and hiking conditions are perfect. During this time, you'll enjoy lush green fields and sunshine, creating the most beautiful scenery.
Start early, preferably before 10 AM. This helps you avoid hiking in crowded conditions, especially during the busy summer months.
Best time: Late May to early October (I hiked in early July). Most picturesque time: Autumn, when the trees turn golden (late September to October). Avoid: After heavy rain (the forest paths can become muddy and slippery). Winter: Hiking is still possible, but you'll need proper gear (the paths may be snowy and less safe).
I hiked this trail in early July and started around 10:30 AM. By then, the parking lot was getting busy, so if you prefer a quieter hike, try to start earlier!
