United vs. Delta: The Ongoing Battle
I don’t want to ruffle any feathers, but I can’t help but wonder if anyone else feels the same way I do, or at least thinks this is becoming a reality. Especially since Delta has long been regarded as the most beloved airline in the U.S.
When we take a look at the three largest airlines in America, the competitive landscape has shifted significantly in recent years, both in terms of financial performance and brand perception. Delta has always been seen as number one, while American and United were often neck and neck, trailing behind. Recently, however, United has surpassed American and is getting closer to Delta.
Customer Perception and Sentiment
This article isn’t about the financial performance of airlines, as Delta still firmly holds the top spot in that area. Instead, it focuses on perception, public sentiment, and overall brand image. While these factors can influence financial performance in the long run, they don’t have an immediate impact.
Maintaining customer loyalty is crucial, and a positive perception of a brand fosters loyal customers. For a long time, I’ve believed that one of Delta’s “secrets” is its marketing as a premium, modern airline that leads in innovation. No other airline in the U.S. has cultivated a loyal customer base like Delta.

United's Progress
United is on an unexpected journey that no one could have imagined a decade ago. There’s no denying that public sentiment towards United has shifted positively. Just last week, I felt a significant turning point when United unveiled new features from their Boeing 787-9 business class to their Airbus A321XLR and A321neo aircraft.
It might just be my own impression, but I feel that United is currently excelling at capturing attention and highlighting the ways in which they are innovating. Not every announcement needs to be packed with specifics (in fact, many of Delta’s announcements are similarly vague), but there’s enough positive momentum for me to think that Delta and United may converge in how the public perceives innovation.
Shifts in the Aviation Market
I also believe that United is leading the charge in developing market practices by considering the priorities of different generations, especially with its strong focus on technology. United’s app is far superior to Delta’s (or any other airline's). While there’s still much to be done, United expects to complete the installation of Starlink Wi-Fi before Delta rolls out its similar service.
But one thing is clear: Delta is no longer the undisputed “premium innovator.” I’m not sure if United has fully reached that level yet, but I think that within the next year or two, United has a real chance to rise based on the current trends.
Conclusion
It seems that Delta is no longer the groundbreaking, uncontested market leader in the U.S. United has been on an upward trajectory for the past few years, but especially recently, they’ve truly captured attention. While this may not allow United to surpass Delta in financial performance immediately, I sense that the perception has changed, and it’s definitely not just an illusion on my part. I’m curious to know, based on your perception of the brand, do you think United has overtaken Delta for the number one spot, or is that close to happening?
