Discover Love Confectionery, a charming classic bakery in Bukit Merah, Singapore, offering a delightful array of sweets and breads at affordable prices.

Exploring Love Confectionery in Bukit Merah

There's something irresistibly charming about classic bakeries. The simple decor and nostalgic treats transport you back to simpler times. One beautiful day, I decided to visit Love Confectionery, nestled in the residential area of Bukit Merah, a bakery renowned for its traditional pastries since 1979.

Located beneath an HDB block in Alexandra, Love Confectionery has an old-world charm with its red-tiled floor and faded sign, resembling a vintage photograph. I was immediately drawn in by the wooden display cases filled with an array of sweets. Here, vibrant slices of cake and pastries are all priced at no more than 1.70 SGD (about 30,000 VND).

Signature Treats

At Love Confectionery, the standout item is undoubtedly the buttercream cake, priced at 1.70 SGD each. I couldn't resist trying several of their delightful offerings. I sampled four of my favorites, each one light and crumbly, requiring careful handling as I transferred them to my tray.

The rainbow-sprinkled cake brought me immense joy. The sponge was fluffy, not too dry, with a delicate vanilla flavor and just the right amount of sweetness. I loved the contrast between the soft cake and the crunchy sprinkles. The buttercream was surprisingly light and flavorful, without being overly rich.

Exploring Other Cakes

I also tried other varieties like the Rainbow Cake, Peanut Butter Cake, and Coconut Cake. Among these, the Peanut Butter Cake was my absolute favorite. The crunchy peanut bits paired wonderfully with the vanilla sponge, creating an enticing aroma. The Coconut Cake, while visually stunning like a little snowy landscape, disappointed me slightly as it was a bit dry.

After indulging my sweet tooth, I decided to try their hot bread (1.20 SGD). I’ve always preferred the simple hotdog buns at bakeries over fancy sausage options. The bread at Love Confectionery is soft with a light sweetness, perfectly complementing the chicken sausage.

Consistent Sweets at Affordable Prices

The Custard Cake (0.80 SGD), while not as smooth as I had hoped, is still worth a try, being larger than the size of my palm. It’s a three-petal flower-shaped cake with visible custard, though the cake itself was a bit bland. The Butter Cake (0.80 SGD), however, was an excellent choice with its smooth golden butter filling.

Other treats like the Kaya Cake (0.80 SGD) are also worth tasting, featuring a fragrant kaya filling, albeit a little sparse. Lastly, I couldn’t resist grabbing a few Custard Puffs at just 0.70 SGD each. While they may not be gourmet choux pastries, the price is truly enticing.

Conclusion

Despite a few less-than-stellar items, Love Confectionery is a must-visit spot. The hotdog bread and buttercream cake are definitely highlights. Plus, the prices are incredibly reasonable; my total bill for everything I purchased was just 12.50 SGD (around 220,000 VND).

If you're looking for a bakery that evokes a sense of nostalgia in Singapore, Love Confectionery is certainly a fantastic choice.
