A Fresh Take on Lufthansa's Business Class

In recent years, Lufthansa has been gearing up to refresh its business class on the Airbus A380 fleet. Initially, the upgrades were slated to begin in 2025, but delays pushed the timeline back. In January 2026, the airline announced the official schedule for the aircraft upgrades, and now there's exciting news: the first plane with the new interior is expected to be ready for service in just a few weeks!

Details on the Interior Upgrade

Lufthansa has confirmed that all eight of its A380 aircraft will receive the new business class seating. Interestingly, only the business class will see new seats; first class, premium economy, and economy will remain unchanged, aside from minor enhancements like improved in-flight entertainment systems. So, when can we expect these aircraft to be upgraded?

The A380 Upgrade Process

The first Airbus A380, designated D-AIMC, arrived in Dresden on February 1, 2026, for its interior upgrade. It is expected to return to service in a few weeks, with plans to complete upgrades for all eight A380s by mid-2027. According to reports from AeroRoutes, the aircraft is scheduled to start flying on April 17, 2026, with routes from Munich to Boston, Delhi, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Washington on alternating days.

New Seats on the A380

Notably, Lufthansa opted not to use the new Allegris seats for these aircraft; instead, they have chosen a different "off-the-shelf" product. Specifically, they have selected the Thompson Aero Vantage XL, featuring a staggered seat design. Each seat will have its own aisle, measuring 58cm wide, with a bed length of at least two meters. The seats will also come equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and flexible dividers. With this upgrade, the number of business class seats will decrease from 78 to 68.

Changes in Seating Classes

First class will remain unchanged at eight seats, premium economy will keep its 52 seats, while economy will still have 371 seats. It's interesting to note how much Lufthansa has evolved its A380 fleet over the years. At the onset of the pandemic, the airline grounded its entire A380 fleet, planning to retire them. However, as long-haul travel demand rebounded strongly, they decided to bring the A380 back into service starting in the summer of 2023, with eight out of 14 aircraft now operational.

Lufthansa's Smart Decision

Lufthansa made a shrewd choice by selecting a common product for the A380, sidestepping the complications involved in certifying the new Allegris seats. This may also explain why they haven't installed Allegris seats on other aircraft, to avoid such issues. Meanwhile, Lufthansa is retrofitting its Boeing 747-8 fleet in a complex process, with new Allegris seats set to be installed on the lower deck, while the upper deck will retain the old seats.

The Future of Business Class

Overall, Lufthansa has embarked on the journey of upgrading business class on its A380s. The first aircraft with the new cabin is set to fly soon, with the entire A380 fleet expected to be operational by mid-2027. Instead of installing the Allegris seats, the airline has chosen the Thompson Aero Vantage XL, marking a significant improvement over the previous offerings on these planes.

Conclusion

The cabin modernization process at Lufthansa is facing several challenges, but these changes are sure to enhance the passenger experience. There's no denying the airline's commitment to improving the flying experience is commendable. Do you think Lufthansa's new business class plans for the A380 are a step in the right direction?
