Lufthansa is currently facing a pilots' strike, significantly affecting numerous flights. Passengers are advised to stay updated for rescheduling options.

Lufthansa Pilots Strike

As Lufthansa celebrates its 100th anniversary, its pilots are gearing up for a strike, creating a whirlwind of disruptions for travelers. This marks the second strike in just a month, following a recent walkout by flight attendants. It’s certainly a shocking turn of events.

Strike Details

The pilots' union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), has announced that pilots from both commercial and cargo sectors will commence their strike at 12:01 AM on Monday, April 13, 2026, continuing until 11:59 PM on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. This strike affects pilots at Lufthansa, Lufthansa CityLine, and Lufthansa Cargo.

Additionally, Eurowings pilots will strike for just one day, from 12:01 AM to 11:59 PM on April 13, 2026. Just a month prior, on March 12 and 13, 2026, we witnessed a two-day strike by pilots, followed by a flight attendant strike on April 10. Having five strike days in a little over a month is indeed a challenge for everyone involved.

Impacted Flights

This strike will affect flights departing from Germany, with the exception of those traveling to and from the Middle East, due to the critical nature of these services. Therefore, flights scheduled to Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will proceed as planned.

Union Response

Andreas Pinheiro, the president of VC, stated, "The VC union feels compelled to take this step after employers have shown an unwillingness to seek solutions in several wage disputes. Although we decided not to strike during the Easter holiday, no serious proposals have been made."

He added, "Employers always have the opportunity to avoid a strike by presenting negotiable proposals. Striking is always a last resort to push for resolutions after failed negotiations. We genuinely want to avoid this – especially when considering the disruptions it causes for our passengers and ground colleagues."

Advice for Passengers

Lufthansa has issued notifications to passengers regarding flights on Monday and Tuesday, enabling them to easily adjust their schedules. The airline advises everyone to check the flight status page to determine if their flight will operate, as most of the canceled flights have already been recorded.

Reasons Behind the Strike

So, why are Lufthansa pilots striking? There are two main reasons. The first concerns the pension fund for pilots at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo. The second involves unsuccessful wage negotiations for pilots at Lufthansa CityLine.

Regarding the pension fund, until 2017, pilots enjoyed a traditional pension plan with guaranteed payments. However, at the company's request, this has been replaced with a capital market-based model that fails to meet previous standards. As for the wage costs of Lufthansa CityLine pilots, negotiations for a new wage contract have been ongoing since August 2025, but no feasible proposals have been put forward yet.

What’s Next?

This strike will also impact flights from Lufthansa CityLine. Ultimately, Lufthansa pilots will strike for two days on Monday and Tuesday (with Eurowings pilots striking only on Monday). It is expected that this strike will affect a vast number of flights departing from Germany, excluding the "essential" flights to the Middle East (which are already limited).

For mainline pilots, this strike is tied to stalled negotiations over the pension fund. Meanwhile, for CityLine pilots, the issue revolves around a new contract. As you can imagine, the union claims that management has been unwilling to offer an acceptable proposal, though management may have a different perspective. This marks the third strike at Lufthansa in just over a month, and it certainly isn’t a good sign.
