It’s hard to believe that Lufthansa's management has been so inept in handling labor relations, despite their claims of pride in this area. I really can’t wrap my head around how they operate.

Continuous Strikes

Lufthansa is experiencing a five-day operational shutdown due to strikes from pilots and cabin crew. Specifically, pilots went on strike on April 13 and 14, having already struck on March 12 and 13. Following that, cabin crew announced strikes for April 15 and 16, after previously striking on April 10.

This means that within a span of seven days, Lufthansa will be unable to operate for five of those days. Most flights departing from Germany are expected to be canceled.

Salary and Working Conditions Issues

The root cause of this situation lies in the disagreement between management and unions over salaries and pensions. There seems to be no indication that the strikes will end anytime soon, as both sides remain distant from reaching an agreement.

This difficulty has occurred far too many times at this airline, and I can't help but feel like we are stuck in an endless loop. While I understand that contract negotiations are always tense, this situation has lingered at Lufthansa for far too long.

Looking at Air France, it’s clear that good management can lead to positive changes in labor relations. So, what significant achievements has Lufthansa’s management made to justify their positions and performance bonuses?

Employees Plan to Protest at Anniversary Celebration

Lufthansa is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary, with German Chancellor Merz expected to attend the event. Employees are planning to protest, with union representatives stating: “When management hosts a 100-year celebration with federal politicians, we will make clear the conditions imposed by the employer – and who is bearing the brunt of the current decisions.”

How is Management Responding?

Lufthansa's leadership claims that employee demands are "unreasonable and unattainable," emphasizing that each strike further weakens this struggling airline. Lufthansa has the lowest profit margins in its group, and they have stated that they are not in a position to invest in new aircraft.

The Situation is Deteriorating

Currently, Lufthansa is in serious trouble, with four consecutive days of strikes from pilots and cabin crew. In a world full of challenges, it’s disappointing that Lufthansa cannot manage its labor relations effectively. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved soon, as everyone suffers when these troubles drag on.
