Discover the charm of Luk Yu Tea House, a 93-year-old tea house in Hong Kong, famous for its dim sum and nostalgic ambiance. Learn about its signature dishes and how to get there.

Introduction to Luk Yu Tea House

When I first heard about Luk Yu Tea House on Stanley Street, a tea house with a remarkable 93-year history, I was both curious and amazed. In a world where many eateries in bustling cities like Singapore come and go, what has allowed this place to thrive for nearly a century? There must be something truly special about it.

As we approached, the large green and yellow sign featuring the Chinese characters '陸羽茶室' was hard to miss. However, Luk Yu hasn’t always been located here; it originally opened in a former bank on Wing Gut Street. After its lease expired, the tea house moved to its current location in 1976 and has maintained its reputation ever since.

Ambiance and Style

Upon entering the second floor, we were greeted by servers dressed in elegant white attire reminiscent of the early 20th century. The décor instantly transported me to the world of the Ip Man films I had seen. The interior exudes a vintage charm, adorned with paintings, calligraphy, antique clocks, and aged wooden furnishings. The menu even resembled the traditional tear-off calendars my grandfather used to hang in his home, entirely written in traditional Chinese characters.

Signature Dishes

As we began to order, we first tried the salted egg yolk and lotus seed paste bun (蛋黃麻蓉包) priced at HKD66 (about 200,000 VND). The bun was enormous, and when we tore it open, the salted egg yolk blended perfectly with the lotus paste and white sesame seeds, creating a deliciously unique flavor.

The five-spice steamed pork ribs (柱侯蒸排骨) priced at HKD72 (about 220,000 VND) were a delightful surprise compared to similar dishes commonly found in Singapore. Each rib was steamed to perfection, retaining its tenderness and rich flavor. The shrimp dumplings with dried fish (脯魚蝦燒賣) were equally enticing, bursting with juicy goodness, though I found them quite similar to the usual siu mai.

Rather than the typical Hong Kong-style baked eggs, I was particularly fond of the Portuguese egg tarts (葡國雞蛋撻), costing HKD66 for three. The flaky crust combined with the rich, aromatic egg filling was simply irresistible. Finally, the shrimp dumpling soup (上湯蝦水餃) priced at HKD120 (about 370,000 VND) was the most surprising dish. Each dumpling was wrapped in a delicate skin, filled with just the right amount of shrimp and meat, complemented by fresh greens in the broth.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

To reach Luk Yu Tea House, the nearest subway station is Central. It’s just a 10-minute walk from Exit D2 of the station. When you arrive, not only should you savor the dim sum, but you should also soak in the beautiful classic atmosphere and attentive service of the establishment.

In Hong Kong, Vietnamese citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 14 days. The cost of a meal here ranges from 200,000 VND to 400,000 VND depending on the dishes you order and the quantity.

Conclusion

Although Luk Yu Tea House boasts a long history and is recognized in the Michelin Guide, I found the cuisine to be decent but not the most outstanding. Nevertheless, the tea house is worth a visit not only for the food but also for its wonderful ambiance and service. If you’re looking for a traditional setting in Hong Kong to enjoy delectable dim sum, Luk Yu Tea House is a solid choice.
