After 34 years of exclusivity with Pepsi, Marriott has decided to switch to Coca-Cola, driven by the preferences of its customers, with over 70% of Bonvoy members favoring Coca-Cola.
Marriott Switches from Pepsi to Coca-Cola
Since 1992, Marriott has had an exclusive agreement with Pepsi to supply beverages across its global properties. Interestingly, this partnership wasn't because customers preferred Pepsi, but because Pepsi offered Marriott a better deal at the time. Back then, Coca-Cola was reluctant to extend a loan to Marriott, which made negotiations difficult.
Now, a significant change is underway as Marriott has announced its transition to Coca-Cola for its beverage offerings worldwide. I vividly recall when Marriott acquired Starwood, and Starwood switched from Coca-Cola to Pepsi, which left many guests dissatisfied.
Representatives from Coca-Cola have expressed their excitement about the new partnership: “The Coca-Cola Company is proud to work with Marriott International’s global portfolio of hotels. We look forward to contributing to creating wonderful experiences for customers at the largest hotel company in the world. Marriott’s decision reflects the strength of our brand and the preference of customers for our diverse beverage portfolio. This partnership reaffirms our mutual commitment to quality, consistency, and enhancing every moment of the vacation experience.”

No More Pepsi at Marriott
I'm quite curious about the reasons behind this shift. Currently, Marriott hasn't officially disclosed why they are moving from Pepsi to Coca-Cola. Did Marriott recognize that exclusively serving Pepsi negatively impacted customer experiences, or did Coca-Cola present a more appealing offer to Marriott?
In an email sent to hotel owners regarding this change, Marriott stated that over 70% of Bonvoy members prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi, which seems to be the driving force behind this transition. I believe customer preference plays a crucial role in this decision, and perhaps Marriott secured a better deal from Coca-Cola than they had before.
Personally, I'm delighted to see this change. Clearly, many people prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi, yet it's rare to see Marriott genuinely consider customer preferences (rather than just settling for what customers might tolerate).
Marriott Confirms Over 70% Customer Preference for Coca-Cola
In summary, Marriott will be transitioning from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, ending a 34-year exclusivity with the beverage giant. Marriott asserts that over 70% of Bonvoy members prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi, which seems quite reasonable. Despite some past conflicts between the two brands, it’s likely that most customers will be pleased with this change.
