About Mauna Lani

Mauna Lani is a beautiful resort located along the Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. I've visited this place more than 12 times, and if the opportunity arises, I would book a stay here tomorrow without hesitation. Since my childhood, it has been an inseparable part of my family memories.

Memories from the Early Days

My parents honeymooned at Mauna Lani back in 1994. They loved it so much that they returned every year, and each December, my sister and I would stay home while they enjoyed a romantic getaway. They would return with hula skirts and coconuts, inviting us to join in on the fun dances.

By 2005, my sister and I were old enough to join our parents on their trips. It felt like stepping into a magical world filled with vibrant lei flowers, refreshing lilikoi drinks, and the warm smiles of the staff.

Impressive Ambiance

Spanning over 32 acres of stunning landscape, Mauna Lani strikes a perfect balance between luxury and intimacy. With more than 300 modernized rooms and suites featuring rich wooden interiors and ocean views, I felt completely immersed in nature.

The resort attracts a diverse range of guests, from newlyweds to multi-generational families. I particularly enjoyed spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, basking on the sand – they seem like a natural part of the scenery here.

Distinctive Cuisine

The biggest highlight at Mauna Lani is undoubtedly the food. Every meal at the two on-site restaurants left an unforgettable impression on me. Breakfast at the buffet featuring traditional malasadas is an experience not to be missed.

The Canoe House restaurant stands out with its creative local dishes, while the Surf Shack is perfect for a fun beachside lunch. The new HāLani restaurant is also a must-try, serving Mediterranean cuisine, including a memorable sticky date pudding that I still think about.

Amazing Activities

When I'm not indulging in delicious meals, I can relax by one of the three pools, play golf, or engage in cultural activities to learn about the history of this sacred land. Notably, there's a fantastic kids' club that families love.

One fun aspect of the resort is a dog named Mika, who occasionally visits guests. It adds a friendly and welcoming touch to the experience of staying here.

Exploring the Surroundings

While there are plenty of exciting activities at the resort, if you have time, I highly recommend exploring the surrounding area. On a recent family trip, we drove through narrow roads, taking in the volcanic mountains and breathtaking landscapes.

We stopped by Kailua-Kona to enjoy the famous Kona coffee and went snorkeling to observe marine life. Hilo is also worth a visit, with its vibrant farmers' markets and fresh, delicious food.

Why I Keep Coming Back

Mauna Lani is not just a hotel; it holds many cherished memories for my family. Every time I see this place, a wave of nostalgia washes over me, from the days spent with my dad and sister soaking in the atmosphere to the first time I brought my husband here.

The concept of ʻohana (family) in Hawaiian culture has deepened my connection to this place. The excellent service, breathtaking scenery, and unique cuisine make me feel that it retains its special character, even after significant renovations. I am certain I will return here soon.
