Travel Safety Tips for the LGBTQ+ Community When Exploring Urban Nightlife
Anyone who has traveled as part of the LGBTQ+ community knows that not every destination offers the same level of safety and comfort. With nearly 200 countries around the world, each place comes with its own set of laws and regulations, which can sometimes turn your vacation into a bit of a headache.
Before you embark on your journey, consider checking out Equaldex, a website that provides insights into how queer-friendly each destination is through its Equality Index. This handy tool will help you understand the regulations and social attitudes of the place you’re visiting.
If you’re planning to explore on your own, do some research on popular bars via Google. However, the best way to get accurate information is to ask locals. Thanks to social media, you can easily connect with many queer residents through posts and groups.
Join a Group Trip
For those who may not feel confident traveling solo, joining a group trip can be a fantastic option. You’ll have the chance to meet fellow travelers and experienced guides who know all about local LGBTQ+ activities.
There are plenty of travel companies specializing in LGBTQ+ tours, such as Brand g and Olivia Travel. You might also want to check out OUT in Colombia, one of the tour operators in one of the liveliest destinations in South America. Traveling with a group not only provides peace of mind but also makes it easier to access the local nightlife.
Discover Safe Nightlife
Once you arrive at your destination, get ready for some exciting activities. However, it’s important to remember that a vacation doesn’t mean you can let your guard down. Before heading out, outline a rough plan for your evening. Are you just visiting one place, or do you plan on bar-hopping? If it’s late, are there ride services available to get you home safely?

As you step out, make sure to carry essentials like your phone, wallet, and hotel card. Never accept drinks from strangers unless you see them being prepared. Another safety tip is to share your location with a trusted friend or family member.
If you’re traveling to a country with an unfamiliar language, prepare a few useful phrases and addresses on your phone. This is especially handy when you might find yourself needing directions at 2 AM with your phone on airplane mode!
Be Mindful of Your Visibility
While LGBTQ+ bars should be welcoming spaces for everyone, the surrounding areas may not be as accepting. Remember that dressing modestly can help you stay safer during your travels. Sometimes, it’s best to avoid areas that might attract negative attention.
Although it's not always ideal, being aware of your visibility can help you steer clear of unwanted situations during your night out.
Connect with New Friends
Connecting with people is one of the main reasons we travel, and exploring a destination with locals can open up entirely new perspectives. However, making connections in a new country where you don’t know anyone can be a challenge.
Personally, I find dating apps like Grindr or Tinder to be quite useful in these situations. I often use them to learn about local residents, and surprisingly, many people are just looking to meet a new friend and show you around their city.
However, exercise caution when using these apps, especially in countries with strict regulations. Before meeting up, request to connect through Instagram or Facebook to verify their information. If they’re unwilling to share, it’s probably best to steer clear.
When you do connect, always meet in public for safety and have a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected. Although I’ve had a few awkward encounters, I’ve also had amazing experiences that I wouldn’t have found otherwise.
