Channel Islands National Park, featuring Santa Cruz Island, is a fantastic destination for a day trip. Discover caves, hike scenic trails, and enjoy unique landscapes.

Overview of Channel Islands National Park

Channel Islands National Park, located in California, USA, is a must-visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With just one day to explore, we planned our itinerary carefully to make the most of our time on Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the five islands in the park. With breathtaking scenery and diverse ecosystems, this destination truly offers an unforgettable experience.

Getting to Santa Cruz Island

To reach Santa Cruz Island, you can take the Island Packers ferry from either Ventura or Oxnard. The ferry ride lasts about an hour and is equipped with restrooms and a snack bar for your convenience. We recommend arriving at the ferry terminal about an hour before departure to check in and enjoy a coffee at Freedom Coffee, a charming little café located right at the terminal.

A One-Day Adventure

We kicked off our day bright and early at 7:00 AM, boarding the ferry at 8:00. Upon arriving at Scorpion Cove on Santa Cruz Island at 9:15, we joined a kayaking tour to explore the sea caves. This adventure lasted about 2.5 hours, providing the perfect mix of exploration and relaxation.

Kayak Tour of the Sea Caves

The kayak tour was exhilarating, taking us through various sea caves where we spotted plenty of wildlife, including seals. One of the highlights was witnessing the picturesque kelp forests beneath the water. Be sure to bring a waterproof bag to protect your personal belongings, especially your phone, if you want to capture the journey.

Hiking the Potato Harbor Trail

After our kayaking adventure, we took a break for lunch at one of the picnic tables near the visitor center before setting off on a hike. The trek to Potato Harbor spans about 5.2 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 600 feet, making it a moderate hike. The trail is quite accessible, with plenty of scenic viewpoints to enjoy along the way.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

To get to Channel Islands National Park from Vietnam, you can fly into Los Angeles or San Francisco, then drive or take a bus to Ventura. The flight duration from Vietnam is around 15-20 hours, depending on your departure point and layovers. Don't forget to check visa requirements, as you'll need a U.S. visa to enter the country.
