Aqaba Marine Reserve: Protecting Biodiversity

B’dour joined the marine protection team at the Aqaba Marine Reserve in late 2022. She collaborates with scientists and researchers to preserve one of the most unique coral reef systems in the world. Starting in 2026, visitors on the Explore Jordan tour will have the chance to meet B’dour and hear her share her story and conservation efforts along the Aqaba coast.

The Aqaba Marine Reserve is located at the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, set apart from other marine areas. It is home to many rare species such as dugongs, sea turtles, and whale sharks. With over 150 species of coral and hundreds of fish species thriving here, it has become a crucial destination for marine research and conservation.

Scientific studies have shown that the corals in the Gulf of Aqaba have adapted over centuries to withstand higher sea temperatures. B’dour emphasizes that this area is not only a national treasure for Jordan but also a living blueprint for the future of our oceans. Unfortunately, experts have warned that corals worldwide are disappearing at an alarming rate. According to a United Nations report, our oceans have absorbed over 90% of the excess heat from climate change, leading to coral bleaching and devastation. Currently, around 84% of coral reefs globally are affected by bleaching.

From a young age, B’dour was aware of the importance of ocean protection. She often felt a sense of fear seeing the ocean’s fragility, which fueled her desire to safeguard it. After studying chemical engineering and working in the field, she realized that happiness eluded her there.

At the end of 2022, upon seeing a job posting for marine protectors from the United Nations Development Programme, B’dour didn’t hesitate to apply. Little did she know that by pursuing her dream, she would become Jordan’s first female marine officer.

When she started her job, B’dour felt it was her true calling. She enjoys her daily work, welcoming visitors to the reserve—ranging from school groups to local families and tourists. The core of her role is educating people about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
