Days of Pain and the Story of Connie: What Few Understand

In May 2024, the community of those suffering from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks lost a bright light with the passing of Connie Rim. Her Facebook page, 'My CSF Leak Story,' was a platform where she shared her relentless struggle for healing and recovery. Her husband publicly shared Connie’s heartfelt reflections about the moments leading up to her death, ensuring the world knew her story. Five years ago, Connie faced a life-altering accident during spine surgery. Throughout that time, she persistently sought treatment, holding onto hope for a life with less pain.

Connie often recounted her journey through videos on Facebook and TikTok, detailing her symptoms, explaining the procedures and tests she underwent, and patiently answering every question. When a chronic patient pauses their treatment, people often wonder why they aren't doing more, as if they had complete control over their condition. Despite the sincerity in her videos, Connie still faced those questions.

In May 2023, Connie posted an extensive list of tests and doctors she had consulted just before heading to Mayo for further diagnosis and treatment of her leak. "This cannot be my life. I am exhausted," she wrote. Although she had seen numerous specialists for leaks, her condition showed little improvement, and the pain remained unbearable.

At rare moments, it seemed that a treatment might alleviate her suffering, giving her a glimmer of hope. However, when it failed, new and even worse pain would emerge. Since late January 2024, she endured stabbing pains throughout the day, sometimes exceeding 20 episodes daily.

This is hard to imagine. By mid-May, Connie was no longer with us. Reading her husband’s words, one can sense the immense struggle she faced against uncontrollable pain.

"There are days when I have only 10-15 minutes of tolerable pain, and I cherish that. But in the remaining 23 hours and 45 minutes, I can only cry and suffer in a hunched position in the dark," she wrote. With a loving family and a supportive community, it seems that nothing was enough as she was trapped in a body that tortured her.

Chronic pain alters the brain, disrupting connections between cells, making emotional processing more challenging. I experienced something similar upon discovering my own condition. After a histamine-rich dinner, my neuropathic and systemic pain flared uncontrollably. A friend helped me uncover the issue related to mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). It saved me from agony by leading me to the right treatment.

While I endured only a few weeks of suffering, Connie lived with her pain for many years. She wrote that "pain dictates my emotions, not the other way around."

Connie's passing sent shockwaves through the CSF leak community, even among those who had never met her. I had been her virtual friend for years, sharing strategies and humorous stories to help each other find a bit of peace in a stressful world.

Despite her pain, Connie maintained her joy whenever possible, cherishing her love for her husband and finding humor in difficult moments. Yet, the long list of treatments and doctors made me feel she had been abandoned time and again. Even when she went to the hospital with clear symptoms, she was told it was all in her head.

We are now preparing for CSF leak awareness week, where we will share various types of diagnoses and emphasize that often normal indicators do not rule out a CSF leak. There are still many misconceptions about this condition that we must work to dispel.
