The flight was rerouted to Boston, and Reid was later sentenced to many years in prison.

The FBI determined that Reid's ignition attempt failed due to the fuse being too damp, compounded by the fact that he had just walked in the rain and was sweating. It was, in reality, a poorly conceived and ineffective plan. Since then, no one has attempted a similar method, although in 2009, another terrorist did try a similar tactic using explosives hidden in his underwear.
