Laifaba in Bukit Batok is a surprisingly delightful wonton noodle shop, featuring melt-in-your-mouth char siu. It's a culinary experience you won't want to miss!

Exploring Laifaba

Recently, I had the chance to visit Laifaba, a renowned wonton noodle shop in Bukit Batok that I had never heard of before. Tucked away in an industrial area surrounded by office buildings, it always has a long line of eager customers. Truly, the wonton noodles here are exceptional!

Laifaba originally started at Ann Siang Hill under the name Laifabar (like a bar), but has now moved to Bukit Batok Crescent. Discovering this place felt like finding a flower in a vast forest. The interior is cozy with a charming retro style, softly lit by warm yellow lights that create a welcoming atmosphere. The shop is adorned with festive decorations, bringing back memories of family gatherings during Tet.

Delicious Dishes at Laifaba

Of course, I couldn't miss trying their signature dish — Laifaba Signature Dry Tossed Noodles (12.80 SGD). I opted for the mixed char siu, so I could enjoy both the sweet lean meat and the rich fatty cuts. Besides the noodles, the bowl also featured a beautifully cooked ajitsuke tamago egg, which looked quite appetizing.

Although the prices are a bit on the higher side, the portion sizes are quite generous, especially compared to more upscale dining options. What surprised me the most was the char siu. Even though I chose the mixed option, each piece was glossy and exuded a wonderful smoky aroma. You absolutely must try the bu jian tian (char siu from the pork belly) — it's rumored to be the best cut with the ideal fat-to-meat ratio.

The char siu at Laifaba is perfectly caramelized on the outside, crispy at the edges, and tender on the inside. It feels like it melts in your mouth, creating an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, the wontons are just right, filled with well-seasoned pork that pairs perfectly with the noodle sauce!

Wonton Noodle Bowl with Collagen Soup

I also tried the accompanying soup, which is unlike the typical wonton noodle soup; it has a distinctive creamy color from the collagen of pork bones. The soup also includes dried scallops, adding a sweet umami flavor. However, compared to the bold taste of the noodles, the soup is slightly milder.

I additionally ordered the fried shrimp dumplings (12 SGD for 5 pieces) to sample. These dumplings are made with fresh shrimp mixed with black mushrooms, chives, and finely chopped carrots, resulting in a juicy and crispy texture. Even though there were only five dumplings, they are quite large, perfect for sharing with a few friends.

Final Thoughts on Laifaba

Laifaba truly was a surprising find for me. The quality of the meat and ingredients here far surpasses other places I've tried. Not only are the dishes delicious, but the service is also excellent, creating a wonderful experience. The wonton noodles here are completely different from anywhere else. The sauce, char siu, and noodles blend together to create an outstanding bowl of wonton noodles.

Even though the prices and location can be a bit challenging to find, I will definitely return to savor more of the bu jian tian flavor and try the sio bak. If you're on the hunt for incredibly delicious wonton noodles in Singapore, don't miss out on Laifaba!
