American Airlines pilots can now issue trading cards to passengers, sparking a mix of opinions among pilots regarding this new initiative.

Trading Cards and the New Initiative

Pilots at American Airlines can now issue trading cards to passengers, a decision that has stirred quite a bit of controversy. Airlines have always aimed to build customer loyalty, so it's not surprising that giving pilots trading cards is becoming a popular practice.

The idea is that passengers can request these cards, which typically feature images of the aircraft they are flying on. This allows travelers to collect various cards. Recently, the popularity of trading cards has surged, likely thanks to social media and the sharing culture.

Delta and the Trading Card Trend

For instance, while Delta has been issuing trading cards since 2003, the demand for these cards has grown significantly. Delta even released special trading cards to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Spirit Airlines has also invested in trading cards, indicating that this is a trend some airlines are keen to adopt.

As of now, American Airlines is the only major airline without this trading card initiative, but that has changed with the Allied Pilots Association (APA) launching this project. The APA describes the initiative as a way to “enhance the passenger experience.”

The Trading Cards and Pilots' Reactions

The cards will feature the union's logo instead of the airline's logo, but will still showcase the full image of the aircraft. Naturally, pilots are responsible for collecting the cards from the bases and distributing them to passengers on the flights. I’m also curious if there will be a QR code on the back of these cards leading to a website, as that might suggest a more engaging purpose behind them.

It's understandable that the American Airlines union expressed disappointment with management and promised to convey this dissatisfaction to all stakeholders. Is this part of a bigger plan?

Mixed Opinions Among Pilots

Interestingly, this initiative has elicited a variety of responses from pilots on social media. Some voiced their support for the trading cards, while others were less enthusiastic. Notably, one pilot mentioned he disliked having to say, “Sorry, kid, I don’t have a card.”

Conversely, some pilots felt unhappy that the union had to fund these trading cards. They expressed skepticism about using union funds for this project, with one comment questioning, “Why should your union pay for this when the company won’t?”

Cultural Issues at American Airlines

If you’re an airline that prioritizes customer service, you would want to encourage interactions like these. When Delta issued a press release about their trading cards, they emphasized that the connection between pilots and passengers can “have a significant impact” and “enhance the flying experience.” It seems Delta is on the right track, highlighting a cultural issue at American Airlines.

The airline has not put enough effort into understanding the importance of positive interactions with frontline staff and how these affect passengers’ perceptions as they leave a flight.

Conclusion

In conclusion, American Airlines pilots now have access to trading cards, but this initiative is being managed through the union, not the airline itself. Therefore, I don’t expect these cards to become as widespread as they are with other airlines where the company directly funds them.

While some pilots are excited to finally be able to hand out trading cards, many others are unhappy that their union funds are being used for this purpose. What do you think about the American Airlines pilots’ initiative to issue trading cards?
