New Contract Negotiations Between Delta Air Lines and Pilots

Delta Air Lines and its pilots are kicking off negotiations for a new contract, with their representative association eager for a swift process. Just this past Monday, they announced their opening proposal, focusing on key priorities such as staffing levels, salary including retirement benefits, holiday and leave days; along with improving hotel quality during layovers, enhancing personal travel benefits, and increasing schedule flexibility.

Negotiation Timeline and Current Situation

The current contract for Delta pilots became effective on March 2, 2023, and can be modified until December 31, 2026. In the airline industry, under the Railway Labor Act, the terms remain in effect until a new agreement is signed. Starting negotiations now makes sense, as these agreements often take a considerable amount of time to finalize.

The March 2023 contract process began on April 5, 2019, and went through federal mediation starting January 6, 2020. However, negotiations were paused in March 2020 due to the pandemic, resuming on January 18, 2022. A tentative agreement was reached on December 2, 2022, and was subsequently ratified on March 1, 2023.

Pilot Benefits and Salaries

In their last agreement, Delta pilots set a new standard in the aviation industry with a contract that resulted in a 34% pay increase over its duration, totaling $7.2 billion over four years. This included an 18% raise in 2023, followed by 5% on January 1, 2024, and 4% on January 1 for both 2025 and 2026.

The airline's financial situation has significantly improved since then, with over $18 billion in pre-tax income in the last four years. Pilots argue that if Delta is to be seen as a leader in the industry, their salaries should reflect that status. Currently, they still earn more than their counterparts at other airlines, although recent agreements have narrowed the gap in base salaries.

Financial Leverage and Negotiation Potential

Delta has set the market for salaries in 2023. However, the current salary advantage primarily stems from profit sharing rather than base pay. For pilots of large aircraft, a captain flying an Airbus A350 with 12 years of experience earns $465.13 per hour, while first officers earn $317.73. For smaller aircraft like the Airbus A330 or 767, the captain's salary is projected to be $404.92 in the coming year.

Pressure and Opportunities in Negotiations

Even though Delta is enjoying record profits and substantial profit sharing, pilots are eager to move quickly and keep the agenda focused. Current profits are high, but conditions can change rapidly with the economic landscape and rising oil prices. This makes it crucial for negotiations to proceed swiftly without interruption from external factors.

In 2012, Delta and ALPA reached an agreement just seven months before the contract expired. Currently, issues related to staffing levels and equipment are hot topics. Delta has ordered 30 Boeing 787-10s, alongside previous orders for the 737-10 MAX, positioning itself strongly for negotiations regarding salaries for these aircraft.

Current Situation Summary

With Delta expected to have 506 pilots retire this year and beginning to recruit again, the association is in a favorable position — though this is tempered by the President's control over the National Mediation Board. Strikes in aviation are rarely permitted, especially under the Biden administration, and the likelihood of one occurring is even lower with the current administration.

Delta pilots are reopening negotiations from a position of strength, but they also recognize that this strength is time-sensitive. Delta continues to uphold a premium brand and high profitability, while the existing salary agreement is no longer superior to that of their peers. Therefore, the time for reaching agreements is now, in case conditions worsen.
