Historical Context
Historically, national expeditions were typically led by military forces, which meant women were often excluded. In fact, organizations like the Royal Geographical Society did not allow women to become full members until 1913. This lack of inclusion is one reason why their stories remain largely unrecorded.

Efforts for Change
Modern explorer Lise Wortley is working to change this narrative with her project, Woman with Altitude. She has documented the stories of 150 female explorers and even recreated their journeys in historical attire to highlight their achievements. However, it’s not an easy task, as cultural barriers still loom large even in today's world.
Take Vedangi Kulkarni, an ultra-distance cyclist, for example. Growing up in India, she faced immense pressure from her family. Yet, she found support from her father to pursue her dreams. Vedangi's experiences illustrate that the challenges she faced were not solely based on her gender, but also stemmed from the privileges associated with her passport, which complicated her travel visa applications around the globe.
Current Challenges
Today, many women struggle to secure funding for their expeditions. Lise Wortley admits to feeling stressed about raising funds and collaborating with brands. The burdens they carry are not just financial; there's also the mental pressure of crafting their narratives to capture the media's attention.
Still Dreaming of the Future
Despite these challenges, women continue to persevere on their exploratory paths. As Vedangi has shown, no barrier—be it cultural, financial, or social—can stop them from discovering the world. We hope that one day, their stories will be shared more widely, not just in history books but also across television programs and various media platforms.
