Passengers on an American Airlines flight were surprised to learn their departure was delayed because the pilot was waiting in line at Starbucks. This story sheds light on the airline's coffee quality.
A Unique Situation at American Airlines
Airlines often face flight delays for various reasons, such as weather, maintenance, or late arrivals. But a pilot waiting in line at Starbucks? That's a new one! A passenger on an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Liberia, Costa Rica recently shared a fascinating tale about how their flight was delayed simply because the pilot was busy buying coffee.
This passenger recounted, "We heard the announcement calling for Captain DeWalt. Then, after about 5 or 10 minutes, we heard his name again. Everyone sighed and chatted about how American this was—our pilot was missing for coffee!" After deciding to take a restroom break, the passenger unexpectedly bumped into Captain DeWalt, who had indeed arrived late because he was in line at Starbucks. When he got to the gate, both he and the gate staff were laughing, but I couldn't help but think: "Is there any respect for the passengers when the entire flight is delayed just because you needed a Starbucks coffee? Or maybe it reflects the pilot's thoughts on American Airlines' coffee."
Coffee is a Big Deal
Many passengers reported hearing multiple announcements calling for the pilot over the loudspeaker before he finally showed up with a coffee in hand. Gary Leff pointed out a clear issue: this reflects heavily on American Airlines' coffee. For years, the airline has served what could only be described as brown water.
If you’re a pilot gearing up for a long flight, I completely understand the temptation to seek something better at the airport. Honestly, even as a coffee aficionado, I admit that Starbucks is a significant upgrade from what American Airlines serves in-flight.

The Responsibility of the Pilot
However, American Airlines also needs to take responsibility for this. When the in-flight product is so poor that even the pilots don't want to drink it, that's a real problem. That’s why the airline is transitioning to Lavazza, and I hope that change comes soon.
Better coffee is not just about passenger experience; it's also an operational issue. If the crew feels the need to hunt for caffeine before every flight, delays like this will become more common, especially at Charlotte, where AA is already packed.
However, unlike Gary, I’m not willing to excuse the pilot. This isn’t just about bad coffee; it’s about accountability. Pilots are very well compensated. With that comes a basic expectation: arrive on time and don’t delay the entire flight just because you need a latte.
The Ironic Twist
It's quite ironic that this all happened at Starbucks. If you're going to delay a flight for coffee, at least choose a good one... (in CLT, that would be CommonSpace Coffee at Concourse E).
Conclusion
American Airlines continues to serve poor-quality coffee, forcing even their pilots to seek alternatives. Yet, the pilot also made a decision that inconvenienced the entire flight. The upcoming switch to Lavazza should help improve the situation, but even now, there’s no excuse for delaying a flight just because you got stuck in line at Starbucks.
