Introducing Rosewood Hotels & Resorts
Recently, I've been diving into the world of elite luxury hotel groups like Airelles, Aman, BVLGARI, and Capella. Today, I’d like to shine a spotlight on Rosewood, a brand I haven't dedicated a post to until now. Rosewood is currently one of the most rapidly growing and intriguing hotel groups in the industry. When compared to Four Seasons, Rosewood stands as a direct competitor, each brand boasting its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
The History and Ownership Structure of Rosewood
The histories of hotel groups are often fascinating, and Rosewood is no exception. We can break down its timeline into two key phases: from 1979 to 2011, and from 2011 to the present. Rosewood was founded in 1979 in Dallas by Caroline Rose Hunt, daughter of a wealthy oil magnate. Their first property was The Mansion on Turtle Creek. Between 1979 and 2011, the brand grew from a single hotel to 19 properties, primarily focusing on hotels and resorts across the Americas, including the U.S., the Caribbean, and Mexico.
2011 marked a significant turning point when New World Hospitality (now Rosewood Hotel Group) acquired the Rosewood brand for $229.5 million. New World Hospitality is owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, a major real estate and investment group. This acquisition allowed Rosewood to rapidly expand its footprint in the luxury hotel sector.
Highlights of Rosewood
Rosewood employs a unique growth strategy. While many hotel groups opt for a lighter asset management model, Rosewood invests in a substantial number of branded properties. Notably, their portfolio has seen robust expansion in Asia, with many new hotels recently opening. Another standout is CEO Sonia Cheng, who has held the position since 2011. Despite being part of a billionaire family, Cheng is passionately committed to leading the brand and is deeply involved in its operations.
Growth and Development Portfolio of Rosewood
In recent years, Rosewood's portfolio has experienced impressive growth. In 2011, the brand had just 19 properties, but it now boasts 38 hotels across 23 countries. Remarkably, there are nearly 20 additional properties in development, indicating that Rosewood could soon reach around 60 hotels. The mix of Rosewood's hotel types is particularly exciting, featuring outstanding city hotels like Rosewood Chancery London and Rosewood Hong Kong, alongside exquisite resorts like Rosewood Mandarina and Rosewood Little Dix Bay.

Notably, Rosewood also owns several historic and captivating properties, such as The Carlyle in New York and Rosewood Villa Magna. In Asia, Rosewood properties are often highly regarded, primarily because they are mostly owned by the parent company and aim to leave a lasting impression on guests.
Assessing Rosewood's Competitive Position
The luxury hotel market is highly competitive, so where does Rosewood fit into this landscape? Rosewood is significantly larger than smaller groups like Airelles or Capella but smaller than major brands like Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton. In terms of property count, Rosewood is comparable to Aman and Waldorf Astoria, all hovering around 30-40 properties. I see Rosewood as a key rival to Four Seasons in terms of experience and quality.
While Four Seasons offers a more consistent service, Rosewood's properties tend to be smaller and feature more interesting designs. Rosewood also has a strong presence in Asia, thanks to its origins. While not all Rosewood hotels are on the same level, most are exceptional and rank among the best in the market.
How to Book at Rosewood with Special Offers
Like many other luxury hotels, there are various ways to book a stay at Rosewood, but booking directly isn't always the best option. One of the best ways to secure exclusive offers is to book through a travel agent affiliated with Rosewood Elite, the brand's preferred partner program. When you book through this channel, you'll enjoy a range of exclusive amenities such as daily breakfast, room upgrades, and more benefits. The Rosewood Elite rates can be combined with any other available rates, allowing you to maximize your value without spending extra.
Rosewood Hotels Locations Around the Globe
To make sure you don't miss any information, I want to highlight some of Rosewood's locations worldwide. In the U.S., you can find Rosewood hotels such as:
- Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort (Kona, Hawaii)
- The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel (New York, New York)
- Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek (Dallas, Texas)
- Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi (Santa Fe, New Mexico)
- Rosewood Sand Hill (Menlo Park, California)
- Rosewood Washington, D.C.
- Rosewood Miramar Beach (Santa Barbara, California)
I am genuinely impressed with what Rosewood has achieved and the path they are pursuing.
