Sanctuary City Airports May Lose All International Flights

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin is contemplating the removal of Customs and Border Protection staff from airports located in so-called "sanctuary cities." If this proposal comes to fruition, international travelers would no longer be able to fly into these airports. Mullin argues that since the Democratic Party refuses to fund the Department of Homeland Security, these cities should not benefit from it.

Major Cities and International Airports

Mullin believes that sanctuary cities operate outside the law. Some of these cities boast international airports, prompting the question: should customs operations even be conducted in these locations? We need to carefully consider this.

The airports at risk include JFK (New York), LAX (Los Angeles), O'Hare (Chicago), Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Boston, Portland, and Newark. This means that all international flights to and from these airports could come to a halt.

Implications of the New Policy

While flights with pre-departure customs checks may still be allowed, they would effectively be classified as domestic flights rather than international ones. Maintaining international departure flights while eliminating arrivals would be illogical.

In my opinion, this proposal is outrageous. Airports often don’t fall under the same jurisdiction as the sanctuary cities themselves. For instance, Washington, D.C. has an airport, but Washington National Airport is located in Arlington, Virginia. San Francisco International Airport is actually situated in San Mateo County, not within the city limits of San Francisco.

Economic Impact and Reach

Removing customs officials would not only disrupt travel for individuals but could also pose a threat to the economy. Airports like LAX and JFK serve vast regions, not just the cities they are located in. Many travelers from surrounding areas still need to fly into Los Angeles and would require customs processing at these major airports.

What Will Happen to Flight Schedules?

International flights must land at airports with Federal Inspection Stations, so where would flights to JFK, LAX, and Chicago O'Hare be redirected? With fuel prices soaring, it’s likely there won’t be any suitable alternatives for landing. Without international connections, what will airlines do about the affected flights?

This situation would not only impact legitimate travelers but could also have repercussions for airlines, airport staff, the tourism industry, and cargo transporters.

Conclusion

This proposal is not only unreasonable but also contradicts the fundamental priorities of the government. In reality, it could harm the economy and weaken support from voters. California's economy heavily relies on activities at the Port of Los Angeles and other major airports.

It seems that this policy is more of a concern than a genuine solution to the ongoing issues between sanctuary cities and the federal government.
