Delta and Southwest Airlines have announced a hike in baggage fees, leaving passengers with an unwelcome surprise at check-in.

Recent Baggage Fee Increases

Recently, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines have both announced increases in their carry-on baggage fees, a move that has taken many travelers by surprise. The rising fuel prices and instability in the Middle East have prompted airlines to adjust their pricing strategies.

New Baggage Costs

Starting this week, Delta will charge $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second, marking a $10 increase from previous rates. Notably, the fee for a third checked bag will soar to $200. A representative from Delta stated that these increases reflect the rising operational costs, particularly the soaring fuel prices in recent months.

Not to be outdone, Southwest Airlines has also announced a $10 increase in its checked baggage fees, now reaching $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second, matching Delta's rates. It’s worth mentioning that less than a year ago, Southwest abandoned its long-standing “free baggage” policy.

Reasons Behind the Fee Hike

These changes come amid a nearly 90% surge in jet fuel prices recently, driven by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Airlines have a long-standing tradition of synchronizing their fee structures, so the increase in baggage fees is not entirely surprising.

Other Airlines Following Suit

Last week, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways also raised their checked baggage fees. Other airlines typically follow suit with such price hikes. American Airlines stands out as the only major carrier yet to implement such increases.

Will American Airlines Join the Trend?

However, given the historical tendency of airlines to capitalize on competitors' price increases, it’s likely that American Airlines won’t maintain its current stance for long. If American decides to raise its fees, I wouldn’t be surprised if this announcement comes out just before this article goes live.

Conclusion

In summary, Delta and Southwest have raised their checked baggage fees to keep pace with United and JetBlue. This indicates a significant shift in the airline industry as they seek to balance fuel costs with ticket prices without disappointing passengers. However, if the situation stabilizes, it will be challenging for these airlines to lower their baggage fees.
