What Makes the Amex Business Platinum Card Special?

The American Express Platinum Card is one of the most prestigious credit cards available today. Anyone who has heard of the American Express Platinum Card knows just how renowned it is. Today, I’ll provide a deeper insight into the Business Platinum Card from American Express, the version designed for businesses. Is this card worth having, and in what situations should you use it?

Exciting New Customer Offers

Currently, the Amex Business Platinum Card has an incredibly attractive offer: you can earn up to 300,000 Membership Rewards points if you spend $20,000 within the first three months. For me, those 300,000 points are worth about $5,100. That's fantastic!

Application Rules

This offer does not apply to anyone who has ever had the card or is currently using it, according to Amex's "once in a lifetime" rule. If you've had the card before, you may still be approved, but you won't receive the bonus. I find it relatively easy to get approved for the Amex Business card, especially for those with a good credit score.

Annual Fee and Authorized User Fees

The Amex Business Platinum Card has an annual fee of $895, which is among the highest fees currently available. If you want to add an authorized user, each one will incur an additional fee of $400. These users will enjoy lounge access and hotel benefits, but won't receive any additional credits.

How Points are Earned

In my opinion, the Amex Business Platinum Card is quite valuable due to the benefits it offers, although there are many situations where spending might not yield the highest value. This card earns 5 points for every dollar spent on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel, but that is somewhat limited.

Reward Points on Business Category Spending

The card also offers 2 points for every dollar spent in specific categories such as purchases at building material suppliers, software and cloud service providers, and shipping services. The maximum for this program is $2 million per year.

Reward Points on Other Spending

For other expenses, the Amex Business Platinum Card only provides 1 point per dollar. I’ve noticed that many other Amex cards offer between 1.5 to 2 points per dollar, so I think it’s wise to use those cards for everyday spending.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The Amex Business Platinum Card does not charge foreign transaction fees, making it very convenient if you plan to spend abroad.

Additional Credits for Spending Over $250,000

This card includes additional credits for those who spend over $250,000 annually. You can earn up to $3,600 in credits through Amex Travel, including $1,200 for flights and $2,400 for your monthly American Express One AP fees.

Reward Point Redemption Options

The Membership Rewards points from this card can be transferred to airline or hotel partners, or you can redeem them for cash to save on flight costs. One interesting feature is that the Amex Business Platinum Card offers you special rates when redeeming points for cash towards flights.

Transferring Points to Airline and Hotel Partners

The best way to use your Amex points is to transfer them to partners within the Membership Rewards program. You can transfer points to up to 21 different partners, including 18 airlines and 3 hotel chains.

This transfer option is extremely beneficial, helping you save costs on business or first-class flights. Typically, these tickets are very expensive if paid for in cash, but with reward points, you can snag a great deal. Moreover, Amex frequently runs promotions for point transfers, allowing you to save even more.
