As soon as I stepped into Gus's courtyard, I was instantly captivated by the serene atmosphere and the warm hospitality of Gus and his wife. They welcomed us with a refreshing cup of ginger tea. Our batik painting lesson took place in their lovely garden, under a shady awning that allowed us to unleash our creativity. You can choose how long you want your session to be; we spent about 2 to 2.5 hours each day, but next time, I’ll definitely opt for a longer session!

While painting, I enjoyed the lively surroundings—chickens wandering freely, dogs basking in the sun, and birds chirping from their cages. Although I personally don’t support caged birds, it’s quite common in Bali.

Meet Gus - Your Artistic Guide

Gus is not just an artist; he’s a master with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and has taught many generations of students. Watching him demonstrate the techniques while guiding us, it felt as if this art form was an integral part of his life.

Learning Traditional Batik Painting

Each participant receives a piece of cotton fabric, a simple design sketched in pencil, and a canting—a tool for applying hot wax. It’s both exciting and challenging; painting with wax is no easy task. We quickly realized that controlling our hands was key. If you go too slowly, the wax drips; too quickly, and the lines become thick. But the more we practiced, the better we got!

Once we created our wax outlines, the next step was to add color (my favorite part!). The wax keeps the colors from bleeding, and painting while listening to the birds and the natural sounds around us was incredibly relaxing.

However, you won’t be able to take your artwork home right away since it needs to have the wax cleaned off and dry for about 24 hours.

Bali’s Music and Dance

In addition to batik painting, Gus introduced us to traditional gamelan music and Balinese dance. We even got to try our hands at both! The sound of the gamelan is an essential part of ceremonies and festivals in Bali.

Traditional Gamelan Music

Gamelan is a traditional Balinese percussion ensemble. It features various instruments, and each gamelan requires at least seven players. The sound of gamelan is distinctive and easily recognizable.

Balinese Dance & Masks

Traditional masks represent different characters, including guardians, spirits, and even demons. Gus has a collection of ancestral masks passed down from his father. We even tried some basic movements of Balinese dance!

How to Book Your Batik Painting Session

If you want to join this unique experience, it’s best to contact Yande, who is acquainted with artist Gus. The sessions are held in Klungkung Regency, about 30 minutes from Sidemen and an hour from Ubud. Consider combining this with a village cultural tour for an even richer experience!
